Probiotic powder for ebf newborn

My osteopath recommended we get probiotics for dd's gut. I bought some Udo's choice infant powder, but am not really sure how to apply it. It suggests coating my nipple with it - How?!?? How would it stick and not go everywhere! Any other way of administering it?

My first thought is this... don't trust your osteopath to know anything about breastfeeding and human digestion! Don't they do bones and joints mostly??

I can't imagine a breastfed baby would need anything else TBH. And as for coating your nips in powder.....just nope!

Just ignore this advice. Breast milk does enough to encourage growth of positive gut flora. You don't need this at all.

Evidence for probiotic effectiveness in adults is dubious at best. No way would I be giving them to a newborn. Breastmilk is all your baby needs for a healthy gut.

Also, you don't know if the probiotic stuff is sterile. Might be, might not. But it won't be when you've been in and out of the bottle a few times.

If it's probiotic it's not sterile by definition.

Oh duh, yes, of course Blush

If you are worried about digestion of your baby then breast milk is the best thing for them to have. Breast milk has stuff like that in it. And at the perfect balance for your child. If your baby is under 6 months then they really don't need anything els

Nipples and breastmilk provide all the gut flora needed naturally don't they ?

rumtumtugger · 03/10/2013 01:19

Ordinarily, yes - but she has been on antibiotics and is suffering from a poorly tummy and LOTS of wind. Anything to help ease her pain!

So, any ideas on how to administer this powder?
