Hi just wondering really, have started counting how many times a day I feed my ds, it's averaging out about 17/18 times a day (24 hours), he is 10 weeks tomorrow, feeds last anything from 5 mins to 30 mins, only time I get along break is if we are out and about in the car or buggy

This sounds normal - it sounds like a lot but if you think of some of the 5 min snackettes as being the first or second half of the same feed it's not quite so many :)

As he gets older he will tolerate longer gaps, even when not in the car or buggy.

I found the most liberating thing to do while BFing is not to count or look at the clock. I feed her when she is hungry and stop when she has enough. I got reallyhung up on the amount and timings of feeds. I do just what comes naturally.

Could try a sling ifyour having problems. It's comforting and you can feed him in it

Ye maybe I shouldn't count, just seems a lot, he never really finishes just seems to fall asleep

I wouldn't count either, in fact I didn't - people MIL kept asking me how often DS2 was feeding and I genuinely didn't know, the answer was "whenever he needed to".

He's still very little, he's doing what he needs to and if feeding little and often is what he needs then let him get on with it. It'll settle down into a more regular pattern soon, you'll have him feeding longer and less frequently.

DS2 was clusterfeeding almost non-stop for about 4 hours in the evening at that age, from ~8pm-midnight. It didn't last long.

Hang in there! :)

Er....I think 'finishing' is falling asleep :)

He is 'finished' ...for now :)

My 10 week old feeds roughly every two hours in the daytime and wakes for one feed in the night - we also dream feed him with a bottle at about half 10. So in a 24 hour period about roughly 12 times?

I did find that once I tried to stop the snacking he fell in to his own routine of c.2 hourly feeds. I don't leave him to wail. But will try and distract him versus always offering boob as the first resort. Just means his feeds tend to be bigger and he empties one and sometimes both boobs.

Guess it depends how well established your supply is. We also cluster feed from about 5 ish until 8/9 but he seems to be naturally cutting back on this too.

What does it mean by established in relation to your supply, how do you know if it's established? What does that mean, just that enough milk there on tap?

If he's coming off on his own terms and not hungry for more, I think, and you're boobs aren't crazy heavy afterwards.

My hv asked the question if how many feeds today. We're at 8 weeks with ds, on demand mixed feeding and it's different every day. Smile

I have a 10 week old too. DD2 is fed on demand so I'm really not sure how often she feeds. We cluster feed from about 6pm-10pm. She has at least one feed in the night and then feeds during the day whenever she wants. I got myself into a right state with DD1 counting feeds, their length and time of feed. My DM told me DD1 shouldn't be feeding more than every 3 hours and I was so sleep deprived I believed her. This time I am going with the flow and it's so much more relaxed and enjoyable.

I think it's quite a personal thing. For me (as I can suffer from engorgement) it means that I've got enough milk to satisfy him but not so much my boobs feel fit to burst if he goes a bit longer between feeds. It has taken about 6-8 weeks with both my boys for everything to settle down and for my body to not make enough milk for triplets Grin.

Bf is supply and demand. So once your body has figured out how much your baby is consuming in a day, it'll then maintain that level. So if your baby starts to space its feeds your body will still make sure you've got enough milk, but they might consume it in a different way - long full feeds vs snacking.

I think that's how it works. Sure someone will correct me if not Grin
