Oversupply and mastitis at the same time - conflicting advice!

Gah - so, I have a bit of oversupply going on (baby spluttering, only taking one side, generally just spraying out at unfortunate moments) but I'm pretty sure I've developed some symptoms of mastitis today (sore red patch on breast, aching, fluey symptoms). I've been googling for advice but the trouble is quite a bit of advice seems to be conflicting - for oversupply you should leave it longer between feeds if possible and avoid draining the breast too much so as to minimise the trigger to produce more milk, but for mastitis you should ensure the breast is drained and feed baby as often as possible. I've been trying to hand express the affected boob after my baby has fed, but the milk just never stops coming! And surely if that means I'm then encouraging my body to make more that could lead to the mastitis symptoms worsening?

Sorry for rambling post. I have my six week check on Tuesday morning so good opp to discuss with dr then, but I just wondered if anyone had any wise words from past experience. Would rather avoid anti-bs if possible. Thank you!

Hi, sorry to hear that. Mastitis is the worst. I would try and treat them separately - deal with the mastitis first and then once you're clear of that deal with the oversupply. So feeding every 2 hours or so and expressing if baby isn't taking much to clear the ducts and get rid of the mastitis.

Once that's well and truly cleared, try block feeding to reduce your supply. So you feed from one side only for a length of time/number pf feeds e.g. 4 hours or 2 feeds (depending on how frequently your baby feeds). Then swap sides for the next 'block'. If you get engorged then express enough to be comfortable only. I had oversupply with both my boys and found that this was a very effective way to deal with it.

Oh, and if you start feeling feverish et to thedoctor and get antibiotics asap. Good luck!

Thank you. Expressed with a pump for the first time this evening and baby took to it like a dream. Is feeling a bit better, so will keep an eye and keep on pumping if I have to!
