Breastfeeding and rotavirus

Just wondered if any one has any experience of their before baby having the rotavirus vaccination.

Sorry, messed that up...
I 'm not sure about whether I should get my before baby vaccinated against rotavirus.

Firstly it strikes me that breastfeeding will protect against gastroenteritis and diarrhoea anyway.

Secondly I've read a few things where mothers have experienced a temporary lactose intolerance following the vaccine.

I'm not anti vax, but am not sure about this one.

Would welcome any thoughts please.Smile

BF doesn't prevent D&V at all, you still have a sad little face wailing at you because their guts are in knots and you aren't making it STOP, stop NOW mummy it hurts. But it was fantastic for keeping DS fed & getting enough fluids into him.

Bloody knackering for me though but don't mind that if it helped keep him from getting dehydrated.

I'd strongly recommend talking to your GP rather than asking on here. Threads about vaccines get descended upon by people telling you you are abusive and evil to even consider vaccinating your child, et bloody cetera.

Thanks for your comments, You're right it's an issue that provokes lots of strong feelings.

I will talk to my GP about it but was just interested to hear other people's thoughts - particularly if anyone's baby has had any adverse effects after it.

Hi crickey,

My DS has had both doses now, is (currently) ebf and has had no problems with either (apart from an understandable expression which said 'lady, this is weird weird weird, and i do not approve!' when the nurse gave him sticky goo with a syringe). Nappies were not fun the day after but again i think that was the sugary suspension!

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 30/09/2013 20:17

Yep DS has had both doses and absolutely fine.

We did see adverse effects, in that my DS was really quite ill after his first dose at 2 months old - he was in real gastrointestinal distress for a good few days with terrible wind and pain and there were some absolutely horrendous nappies. It was definitely caused by the vaccine.

However I still went on to give him the following doses (which he tolerated, no problem at all), because a friend of mine's baby actually caught actual rotavirus and ended up desperately ill and on a drip and I think a few days of ickiness (at worst) following a vaccine is infinitely preferable to an extremely ill baby.

DD had both doses but spat it out. All of it, the nurse thought. So I don't know whether she has any protection or not, but I do know that DS had gastroenteritis aged about 12 months and went from feeding morning and bedtime, to feeding constantly, which at least gave him enough liquid to (just) avoid being admitted. However, BFing didn't stop him getting it IYSWIM.

We had dose 1 last week and my dd2 had a bit of griping pain on two occasions two days after; nappies were loose but they tend to vary anyway with being ebf. She's been fine since though.
