Quick question re timed feeds

Hello,

I am possibly missing something obvious from sleep deprivation, but - I am BF my new LO who is 6 days old. My milk tools while to come in and she lost weight at her second weigh in (7% so not excessive).

The midwife has said I should feed every three hours round the clock til the next weigh in tomorrow. I took this as meaning every three hours no matter how long each feed takes - e.g. 12, 3, 6 etc. BUT she feeds such along time, that with winding it all takes ages. Eg she just fed for 40 mins on one side, burped her and held upright for 25 mins, offerf second breast as suggested, so another 20 mins feeding, then more winding, just in case as seems refluxy.

I hope this rambling question makes sense / essentially what does every three hours actually mean?! It seems weird to wake her again so soon, and i'd like the chance to rest in the gaps a little more.

Milk took not tools! My milk tools are a little sore Smile

Normally it does mean 3 hours from the start of the feed, although I'd suggest if you are holding her for 25 minutes between breasts then that would count as 2 feeds.
Perhaps feed on 1 side, then change her nappy to wake her a little before offering the second side. If she isn't interested then let her sleep until the remainder if 3 hours is up then swap sides.
My lo fed for around 45 minutes when bf in this way, every 3 hours like clockwork and gained weight fine. If it helps they do get more efficient and it reduces a little for how long it takes them to get a feed eventually.
Hopefully you will have good news when you next weigh in. Well done for persevering with it - bfing is hardwork!

Someone much more knowledgable than me will be along very soon, but if she's very windy you should get her latch checked. Could she be tongue tied?

At this stage it's really important to feed as much as you can, both to get some practice and get your supply right!

Congratulations.

Thanks both - good to know my understanding was ok.

I'm not sure she is excessively windy or not - but will raise latch and tongue tie with mw.

Yep, 3hrs from the start of a feed, and it's normal for newborn feeds to take forever I'm afraid! Lol. My dd fed every 2hrs so it seemed like a never-ending cycle of feed, wind & change!

Godh, it's exhausting isn't it?!

I saw a different MW today who said no need to switch boobs which will make the whole thing easier. Also said it is fine to demand feed at night, so hopefully that will hopefully help.

Also LO has regained some weight in the past two days, so I feel better that I am doing something right. Smile

Yes, it is exhausting...but it will get better.Smile

It is suggested that you feed from one breast and then offer the other breast ( they may or may not want it). This is so that your supply remains stimulated. Sounds like things are going well tho' -congratulations!
