My ds is 5 weeks and breastfed. He has settled down for the night and usually stay down till 3/4 ish.
Would a glass of wine be ok? And what if he decides to wake before this which knowing my luck he will, will I be ok to feed him? Really fancy one this evening but won't if it will affect baby

I risked it at around the same age and DD was absolutely fine. I really fancied a wee date night with DP after all we'd all been through Smile

A chicken korma, on the other hand, caused 2 days of shrieking and reluctance to feed. That was a hard learnt lesson Sad.

Oh ive had the chicken Korma lesson already poor sod had a couple of very explosive nappies
I'm gonna have a small one, it's been so long ive forgotten what it tastes like!

My first lovely HV told new mums to have a glass of wine of a night. Her reasoning being that the vanishingly small tiny potential side-effects of one glass of wine were easily outweighed for the baby by having a happy mum. I believe that hardly any alcohol gets through into the milk.

VioletHunter · 27/09/2013 22:35

It's absolutely fine. The amount of alcohol that goes into the milk is negligible. You'd have to be completely trollied before it affected the baby.

No need to pump and dump, either - any alcohol leaves your milk at the same rate as it leaves your blood.

Oh thanks violet I didnt know u didnt have to pump some out ill keep that in mind
Its funny u would think I would know this stuff as this is my 2nd baby, but didnt breastfeed past a few days with my first so didnt need to, theres always something to learn!

I have a glass of wine a few nights a week and I'm bfing. It's fine. I fed dc1 for 18 months, there was no way I was going to be teetotal for that long! The midwife told me if you're fine to drive, you're fine to feed. So one glass isn't going to do any harm. Enjoy Wine

One trick, to max the time between having a drink and baby nursing is to drink glass of wine during the a feed. Normally a feed when you know you've got the longest most likely gap between feeds, so like you said, an evening where baby most likely wake till 5 or 6 hours later

Trying to avoid feeding during the peak of alcohol in the milk, which is about 60-90 mins but later when eaten. And everyone is different. Studies show babies can taste alcohol in milk and will simply drink less, so they'll come back for a feed sooner than normal!

Thanks chocolate lucky for me he usually settles from 7/8ish till 3 so got a nice stretch of sleep, the other timeis morning about 8-11:30, but cant justify having a glass at that time (wink)
