I've been trying to wind DS for nearly an hour - what else can I try?

Poor thing, he is hungry and tired. He had a tiny bit of milk (bf) and then started screaming. He hasn't been able to feed since.

I've lay in on his back, patted his back, put him over my shoulder, tiger in the tree, lay him on his tummy...

He is nearly four months and we have this problem everyday. I think I have an overactive let down as he usually pulls away and screams in the first few minutes of drinking.

Any tips?

Has he always been like this or is it recent? I know he's a bit early for it but could he be teething ?

He might actually be overtired therefore too tired to feed and all of those methods are making him worse.

Try feeding him an hour earlier and having earlier bedtime.

Bothie went through a phase around three months that seemed to be early teething - screaming after a few seconds feeding as if in pain. Anbesol liquid on the gums was the only thing that worked for us. I think not hurts to feed when their gums are sore. Neither of them actually got teeth till 9 months, but it was definitely teething pain bothering them.

Chub - he hasn't always been like this but we've always had feeding issues. Getting that latch right was so difficult and he always seems to get wind at the drop of a hat and struggles to expel it. He used to be sick a lot, not a little bit of white sick but lots of thick yellow stuff.

He has got better at burping but he often has trapped wind (I think) and when he eventually farts it sounds (and) smells like there is a man in the room, not a baby.

So a typical feed now will last for 2-4 minutes then he will pull away crying. He'll possibly let out a nice big burp if I sit him up and pat his back but up to an hour later there are still some little burps popping out.

It causes problem with naps too. Often when he wakes up after a short nap absolutely screaming, I pick him up and out pops a burp. So it has been lurking there inside him and then causes him so much discomfort that it wakes him.

Sorry, this is getting long now. I'll keep an open mind about teeth but I need to get some sleep now in case he wants to make up for lost milk tonight.

And most importantly, the dream feed worked. He drank for about 15 mins and he is back in bed sleeping now.

Glad he's sleeping Smile. Obviously I meant to say "both mine" rather than bothie.

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2013 21:32

Glad he's settled. I really would see about meds though.

Forgive me for not reading the thread - I've has similar symptoms with my dd who had tongue tie (especially the wind and burps)

TheABC · 30/09/2013 21:53

Cob - apologies if you have tried this, but what about over the counter remedies, such as Infacol? We gave this religiously with every feed when DS was smaller and it really worked. I also make use of the sling and watch my diet like a hawk - onions, beans and garlic are the main culprits in his case.

My DD1 was just like this at that age. I went to my local BF expert and she agreed it looked like fast let down and needing to burp, but nothing would get DD to burp (and she was very experienced - if she couldn't get DD to burp, no one could). I tried diff positions, trying to express off a bit, etc. but in the end I just managed the best I could and went with time-cures-all. As DD got older it got milder, and I BF'd till almost 2yrs. DD managed on really short feeds for a while. Obviously I'm not suggesting you give up trying things, but wanted to reassure you that I managed to muddle through with no big problems.

Gp suggested to me burping by straddling baby over knee, one leg either side and gently pulling up under his arms to lift him slightly for a second then repeat. I do this 10 times then put him over my shoulder and it works a treat for us.

Have you considered a reflux issue? Crying when feeding can be a classic sign (was with my ds) as well as lots of sick. I find my lo often cries after burping as it aggravates where his tummy is sore. If he is arching his back when feeding defo worth another trip o gp about it. Best of luck. X

Thanks for tips everyone.

Not much to report. I could only get a telephone appt with GP today. We had a quick chat and she wants to see baby so I've got a 'proper' appt tomorrow.

There was much screaming and a poo in the night and two more today so hopefully he is feeling a bit better.
