Reflux improving -how do I know if its cma or ranitidine?!

My 16 week old has severe reflux and has been on ranitidine, domperidone etc since about 8 weeks.
It was really effective, then became less so and so his dose was increased just over a week ago, then again a few days ago. Doc also wanted to see if he could have a cma so switched him to neocate which we started him on yesterday.
Today he has been happy, smiling, better in his pushchair, less fussing on feeds and generally much brighter. He also had a poo that wasn't dark green (tmi, sorry).
So, I now don't know what's helping him. Could it be the new formula has kicked in so quickly, or is it more likely that the increased dosages have kicked in?
Does the poo colour change suggest a healthier digestion, or just different formula?
Any experiences helpful. Obviously if its cma I will discuss with the consultant about coming off his drugs as they can't be good for him long term.
Thanks! x

Don't know about cma but DS2 was on those drugs for 9 months at that age and no ill effects at all (now a healthy 8yo but prone to heartburn if eats acidic food eg green apple) Hope that reassures Thanks

Our experience with withdrawing dairy (BF baby but same principle) was that it took weeks to see the effects. You need to clear their system of CMP and then allow the gut to heal. I think change in poo colour is probably the Neocate, but I would think immediate improvement is more Ranitidine really.
Our experience was things didn't really improve until we were dairy and soya free and on omeprazole. Meds weaned off at 16m old, previous attempts a disaster. On to normal diet ( outgrew the MSPI) between 2 and 3. No long term adverse effects.
Nobody has really been able to explain why if there is an underlying CMPI it's not as simple as get rid of the CMP and stop the meds, but that was not our experience. We needed both angles to keep it under control, if we had a diet slip up or tried to reduce the meds too early, boy did we know about it!

Really helpful, thanks. Just so excited to have a happy baby again! Plus as he is not gaining weight we may have to start weaning soon so I want to know if cmpi is an issue as it will obviously affect weaning lots long term. If it is I obviously need to be super careful, but if not then I don't want to unnecessarily deprive him of foods. X

We had no weight gain as a CMPI symptom, improved as soon as we were dairy free. I think his poor gut was so inflammed he couldn't absorb nutrients Sad
Hope you have turned a corner.

My guess is it is the CMP but it's just that - a guess. Has he suddenly stopped vomiting as much or has it stayed the same/ he was never a vomiter anyway?

I think a small dose increase of ranitidine (if it was small) woul have been unlikely to make much difference.

DD is outgrowing severe reflux, finally at 2, multiple foods (all fruits more acidic than apple, all orange veg, and even potatoes fgs!) triggered hers but most particularly dairy and soya. We found that it didn't matter what dosage the meds were, they were totally ineffective if she had so much as a trace of dairy. If she was dairy and soya free the meds worked, if she wasn't they didn't. Although it will take a while for dc to be totally dairy free (prob 3 weeks) I'm guessing its the change of formula. However as others have mentioned its likely to need an elimination diet and drug regimen to manage the reflux properly. DD is finally being weaned off a heroic dose of omeprazole.

As an aside I recently weaned ds who had a cmpa and it wasn't too bad! Use formula in place of milk and if you choose to use a jar type food they are all really clearly labeled Smile we slowly reintroduced some dairy and he is doing well so fingers crossed its as easy for you!

Ok, thanks. That's interesting that a combo may be needed of formula and drugs. was hoping not to have to continue with them as its so distressing to have 8 syringes a day :(.
My niece has cmpi along with other allergies so at least I can get some tips for weaning off her! Hopefully though he will now start to gain weight bakingtins as your experience so weaning won't need to be quite so soon.
Ragusa, its hard to tell. I would say yes, although we had a few sick episodes this afternoon, but at the end of the day I wasn't plastered which s a good sign. That said sometimes we just have good days so I don't want to talk too soon.
Ill be interested to see if sleep improves too...(please!)
Thanks for your replies. X
