Help with a powerful let down?

DD is a week old now and my milk is well amd truly in. I seem to have quite the over supply at the moment and a very fast let down that makes DD gag, splutter and be sick when it kicks in.

I had this for a few weeks with my DS as well and was advised to wear a tight bra to inhibit milk production and when feeding to press down hard on the spare boob to slow down leakage.

Yeah, I got raging mastitis doing that so I won't be following that advice again!

Any hints to help DD and I cope until my supply settles down? Been through 4 tops, 4 bras and a whole box of TT breast pads today!

Have you tried reclining (just lean back) whilst feeding? I found it worked like turning down a tap. Particularly if she's struggling to latch you're probably leaning forward to see what you are doing. Otherwise google "block feeding" but keep the intervals short to avoid mastitis. It will settle down as your supply adjusts to her needs.

I have a really fast let down too, my baby will suck fora bit then I'll feel the milk really come down and he'll start to cough, when that happens I don't let him reattach until the flow has calmed down a bit. I let it spray into a muslin and latch him on again once the flow is steadier. Bit annoying but it works for us.

Agree with Soursweets about using a muslin. I had very fast let down leaving both DD's choking.
I would wait for the milk to come out and when DD pulled off to cough I would let the milk spray into a muslin until it had stopped spraying out so violently! They were then able to re attach without much trouble. Good luck!

Thank you, I shall try letting it spray into a towel or muslin then getting her latched on. I hurt my back a while ago (fell off a curb Blush ) so can't really recline comfortably, either have to lie down or sit upright.

I had this problem for 10 months so here's lots of tips: Biological nurturing (leaning back) worked for me too, possibly you can look at it on youtube or get expert advice to find a comfortable position? Also feeding lying on my side facing ds. Also lansinoh breast pads (ocado) are the best. I also bought silicone cups from medela that catch excess milk, I used them to catch the spray sometimes while feeding & poured it into a nearby container. I also bought nursing clothes with two complete layers of fabric at the front, you lift the first up where it stays clean then feed, so any drips etc from feeding are then hidden away when you finish feeding. www.mamaway.co.uk/?action=products_detail&prod_id=1315&color_code=B I also bought lots of cheap bibs at mothercare that were towelling on the front and waterproofed at the back. In public I could spray against the bib when ds moved away to cough. Block feeding didn't work for me, I found it impossible to get a balance between too much & too little supply, I ended up donating milk for special care babies for 6m-very rewarding. And it does get better as your supply will either settle down or your baby will grow to handle it better. Ds never fed longer than 20mins and grew very big very fast-sure he'll be great at downing pints in his teenage years!
