Stopping BF - ow!

I'm stopping BF my 10mo. Feeds have been dropped gradually until just bedtime feed and first feed of the day.
Last night I dropped the bedtime feed and he settled happily and slept well. But this morning my boob was enormous! And I had to feed him to relieve the pressure (like newborn days!). It hurt (again, that newborn shard of glass pain feel).
I have always had oversupply in one boob. The other boob is deflated and empty fine, the oversupply boob obviously hasn't received the message. How can I stop? Any ways to stop supply? Just ride the pain? DS more than happy on formula, I am emotionally ready, just physically one boob isn't Hmm

I think I just rode out the pain, but how about just going to one feed first and maybe feeding some formula first so that he doesn't suck for too long. May help to reduce your milk supply before the final feed. I think I expressed just to relieve the pressure when I tried to stop.

I had this happen when I stopped BF both my dcs. Just express a little, enough to take the pressure off but not enough so your body thinks you're feeding and keeps producing more milk. You can always use the expressed milk in cereal or put it in a cup for a drink for baby. I think I used to do it in the shower sometimes too. It may take a few days to settle but eventually your supply will stop.

Thanks - it's much better today, although he's still having a feed at 5 a.m. Fingers crossed it'll be finished soon.

yes I would say express a little at bedtime - express less each day for a week or so and then stop expressing, gives your body time to adapt gradually.

I am also stopping BFing my 10 month old, am still doing morning and bedtime b feeds at the moment. Can I ask you, have you switched to bottle or to sippy cup for the other feeds?

LonelyGoatherd · 27/09/2013 20:21

sippy cup. DS never took to a bottle, but has been drinking water from a sippy cup since 6mo. Didn't want to introduce a bottle at 10mo and then start to phase it out a few weeks later!

thanks... I wonder if I should do the same... DD has been taking a bottle though (until this week but hoping that is a phase!) so thought I would stick with that for the comfort factor, esp at bedtime, but true that it will need to phased out soon.

I went down to 1 feed a day for a few weeks before stopping. It was like my milk had just come in again! Wet nighties, tennis ball boobs etc. It should sort itself out within a few weeks although might bloody uncomfortable for a few days on and off. I had already introduced cows milk in a sippy cup so the transition was pretty easy.
