ds2 is 7.5 months, has always been bf on demand. Since he's been on 3 solid meals a day he won't have milk. Sometimes he does want milk, but then brings up the last meal that he has had. It doesn't matter whether he's been fed 20 mins before or 4 hours before, or whether he has milk for 2 minutes or 22 minutes, he will spend the next 2 hours being sicky. Obviously as he's had no milk during the day, he wants his fill at night time, so he has a bit, goes off to sleep, has a bit, goes off to sleep......you get the picture!

I'm not worried about his weight/development etc, thats all perfectly fine, but does anyone have any ideas that may help?

perhaps he's too full on food to be interested in milk during the day. When my dd went onto 3 meals her milk consumption went down (and her sickiness went up)but then my mum told me i was giving her too much to eat in one go (solids). once i reduced the amount, then her milk consumption went up and she was less sicky.

Thanks alex.

He's def not too full on food. I never force him to have milk, only give him it during the day when he really wants it, but then its 2hrs of cleaning up.

He probably wants teh milk through thirst, but he will not take a drink. I know it takes time for bf babies, but we've been trying for a few months now. He likes playing with sunny D bottles, likes putting the top in his mouth, so maybe I should give him one of those, obviously not Sunny D inside.

If there is anyone out there with any suggestions as to how to get milk into him during the day without it all coming straight back out, I would really appreciate it. I'm not worried about his growth yet, but much longer with no sleep at night, his growth is going to be affected.

Thanks if you can help.

Have you try the Tomme tippy cup (or any other free flow cup) ? Worked wonders with DS2 but he didn't start really drinking from it until I stopped bf ... Obviously before he was getting enough - if not a lot - to drink from 2 bf a day. I started by giving him some diluted fruit juice. He didn't touch milk in a cup until he stopped bf. And the 1/2 cup of watery juice per day he had seems to have been enough (Stopped bf at 12 months old).
Could you try to give him a bf before his meal and them some solids that he is getting enough milk during the day ?
Another idea : why not giving quite a bit of dairy in his meals to compensate for the lack of milk.
Keep on trying the cup (or the bottle you suggested). If he is thirsty, he will drink.

Just another comment.
If in effect he is just getting 3 meals a day and nothing else because he is getting sick after a bf, I am not surprised that he is hungry during the night.
How about trying some yogurt or some porridge in betwen meals ? Would he eat that ?

biglips · 26/06/2006 08:53

possibly that he could be thirsty and not hungry

LeahE · 26/06/2006 09:02

How much of what kind of thing is he eating, and at what times? Does he throw up immediately he's had the milk, or a few minutes later? Is there any coughing involved? Is it full-on projectile vomiting or the slightly more restrained straight-down-his-front version?

LeahE · 26/06/2006 09:03

P.S. At around the same age I could only get DS to drink from an open cup (obviously had to hold it for him) so that might be worth trying. It was a while before I could persuade him to use a sippy cup.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions

Sabine - Haven't tried tho tt cup, I remember it being a PITA with ds1, but I know quite a few peope do use that, so maybe I'll give it another go. Have tried bf first today, and giving his last meal earlier. So far everythings stayed down. He's not keen on yoghurts etc, but likes cheese, so I do try to get that in where I can.

biglips - finding it difficult to get him to drink, but yes I agree, probably is thirst.

Leah - He has a good variety of foods, loves his fruit and veggies, only just got him to like meat/fish, but is eating plenty of them now. I wouldn't have a clue how much he has weight-wise, but a small bowl. He eats at 630/7, 1130/12 & 430/5. Today gave him last meal at 345, hopefully he'll have a good bf about 10ish, then may get 4hrs sleep or so. He starts throwing up within a couple of mins of having the milk. The 1st couple will be coughy sicks, and semi-projectile, then its just the usual bleurgh down his front.
