I just want to have a stupidly proud moment - am still breastfeeding 7 weeks on! Never thought I would get this far - gave up after 6 days with ds1. Have to thank MN for it - the advice given to people that I have read over the last 3 years stuck in my head, and I just kept at it. Past the horrible first couple of weeks, and doing it without thinking now. That's it, just a gloat!

Well done, good for you

CorrieDale · 26/06/2006 06:19

Well done to both of you - gloat as much as you like! Can I just say it gets miles easier the longer you do it?

Bouj · 26/06/2006 06:31

Aw, thanks! I thought I would get a bit of 'get a grip woman, its only 7 weeks'! Must say hunker - your idea of 'wait til morning before giving up' has helped loads. But how much easier is it than bottle feeding?? I can just jump in the car with the boys, visit friends and know that I don't have to take loads of bottles, or we can change plans without worrying about how many feeds we have. And I keep boasting to dh about how I will spend the money I am saving on tins of formula!

Oh, and seeing as you are all interested, will tell you this story!

When I was only five days in, my nipple was bleeding and cracked and I was sobbing. Begged dh to get me some nipple shields and formula from the late night chemist. He sternly told me off, telling me I was doing brilliantly and he wouldn't buy formula. I knew the nipple shields were useless, but I was desperate to keep going. But whilst he was gone, I just gritted my teeth and latched ds2 on, and it wasn't that bad. Dh came back with the shields, but I didn't use them. Anyway, several days later we were going shopping and I was getting the buggy out of the car, and saw a tin of formula hidden under a blanket. He gave me a 'nothing to see here' and hid it again. But I was so pleased to know he believed in me, but wasn't going to let his son starve should the wife have gone doolally by the time he got back!
Sorry, mammoth post

ahhh, what a sweetheart. doesn't it amaze you when they do something so right?!

LeahE · 26/06/2006 09:25

Well done, both of you (and Bouj's DH). You should be very proud of yourselves.

hunkermunker · 26/06/2006 10:01

Oh, I'm glad it helped, Bouj [massive grin] Your DH sounds more supportive than mine...mine said "Well, give him a bloody bottle then!" when I was sobbing over a non-latching DS1 at 3am...

Mind you, he knew that that was just the spur to get me to carry on feeding as I am a stubborn mare and if he'd been sympathetic, I'd probably still be sobbing I did hear him talking about how brilliant bfeeding was about a week later and he's even phoned a LBC to talk about how good it is since

mawbroon · 26/06/2006 10:22

Bouj - well done and it sounds like your DH has been very supportive as well so well done to him too

2plus2plus1 · 26/06/2006 11:12

And certainly more supportive than mine. I had the statement "you're not letting me help" when I wouldn't let him give her a bottle - and he meant it. Come to think of it the only place I have had support is MN. I think one of the worst comments I had was a friend of a friend that said "do you wish you had never started?". I wouldn't have minded as much except I had given no inkling that I was struggling & she didn't even try to BF hers. Only spurred me on more.

Emma7 · 26/06/2006 12:13

Well done you, gloat away! - I am still bf and enjoying it too now! (DD is 9 weeks old tomorrow) I remember those nights with bleeding nipples when I cried and cried and asked DH to get formula and he was brill too calming me down and telling me to wait til morning to decide. I am so glad I kept going and so grateful to MNetters who gave me such wonderful advice and support. I still worry about DDs low weight but know I will always get good advice here.

kiskidee · 26/06/2006 12:34

[applause emoticon] all round.

Highlander · 26/06/2006 13:53

I also found the MN advice completely invaluable.

Highlander · 26/06/2006 13:55

OMG bouj, just read your story. I'd say a huge treat for your DH too, he's worth his weight in gold

moondog · 26/06/2006 17:33

Yes Bouj.
Your dh sounds like a top bloke!!
