Breast pain - any ideas?

Hi,
I'm EBF my DS (3months) and for the last few days I've had pain in one side of my breast. Its sort of like a bruise type ache if that makes sense?

It's there, regardless of which side I've just fed from but worse when that side is quite full (even just cuddling DS against my chest hurts).

I wondered about a blocked duct but am not sure...

Any ideas on what it is and how to alleviate?

Thanks! Smile

I had this too, my nipple swelled up as well. It sounds like a blocked duct to me. Have you tried warm flannels on the breast? Also warm baths and showers, and gentle hand expressing. For me all those things helped to soothe it but it only really went away when I stated feeding and expressing more from that side. Keep an eye on it, if it starts to get red or hot then see a doctor.

Thanks. Its more painful today Sad (but no redness thankfully) I'll try the flannel thing, some hand expressing and some gentle massage. I've been trying to give preferential treatment to the sore side for feeds, but I'm a bit nervous of then making the good side blocked too Confused

It's probably worth having a good look at it. Is there a bruise? Is there a lump?

If there's a lump, feeding with your baby's chin to the lump may help ...

There's nothing to see. Its kind of in the upper quarter, nearest cleavage (the bit the isn't in contact with nursing bra) (if that makes sense!!) so I'd have to feed DS slung over my shoulder for the chin on sore bit to work (there's an image Grin)

Is there anything to feel? Can you feel a lump?

If it's a blocked duct, it's always in a place where his chin doesn't naturally go - there are two ways to get the chin there, with a baby the age of yours - one is to lie him flat on his back on your bed, while you crouch over him on all fours. (classy! But it might work)

The other is to lie on your back, and position him on top of you.

Thanks again for the tips. As luck (?) would have it, DS had a puke-tastic day yesterday so I ended up doing more feeding than usual. That seems to have done the job Smile
