My nipples can't take any more : (

Since my 10 mth old got her 2 front bottom teeth about 3/4 weeks ago my nipples have been continually sore and with fissures in. One was worse than the other to start with, now both as bad as each other.

I upped my usage of lansinoh but it wasn't really helping. Last week I bought some medela nipple shields which really help but she won't leave them on. She'll suck a few times then pull at them, to the point where I've had to take them off in case she hurt me more in pulling/pinching.

I just tried to get her to leave it on, and she's pulled it off so vigorously that my nipple is now bleeding reasonably heavily (for a nipple).

Someone please tell me of something I can do to soothe my poor nipples and continue feeding. Last week I dropped her day time feeds to try and heal but then she stopped sleeping at night. I feed first thing in morning, once in the day, bedtime and then if needed during the night.

I don't know what to do Sad

Have read on here that sone people have sone success with jelonet. Have you read the info on kellymom and spoken to a BFC? The helpline numbers are towards the bottom of the page.

Are you getting any RL help too? Teeth shouldn't cause bleeding, it sounds like it might be something as simple as readjusting her latch. Is there a local bfing group you can go to?

Think I might try the local baby bistro group next week.
It was the ripping off of the nipple shield that caused the bleeding Sad in spite of the lansinoh barrier underneath.

The front bottom teeth shouldn't really be in contact with your nipple in normal breastfeeding - her tongue should be covering them. It's normally the top front teeth that cause a problem ... Is she biting you sometimes?

Some things that may help:

  • yes, jelonet can help, or just put some cream or hindmilk on the injured bit, and then put clingfilm on top
  • changing position may distribute the damage. This isn't ideal, but may help.
  • I've known some mothers to have a good experience by covering the damaged part of their nipple, during the feed, with a bit of skin tape.
