How much can you pump?

I have a mini Medela and can reliably pump about 2oz in 10-15 minutes. Today I did 3oz in 13 minutes. I am interested in how these yields compare. I feed on one breast over night and then pump from the opposite breast in the morning. My baby is always next to me.

Would I get better results with a different pump? Should I have a different tactic re sides?

All experiences, figures and. thoughts appreciated!

If I pump in evening - about 50 - 100ml from one boob in 10ish mins. If in the morning about 150ml. That's with a Medela swing.

I get 6-13oz depending on the time of day. I'm an EE and pump 5 times a day using Philips Avent. I always do 20 mins a session. The amount you get might increase as your baby gets older assuming that it's a newborn?

Wow- good yields! Baby is 1.5 months old. Do you think i will get more when the baby is older? I don't feel short of milk- baby is fine and feeds well.

If you feed from one side whilst lumping on the other you will get more as the baby triggers the let downs quicker.

Ha pumping not lumping!

I get 5oz from both breasts. I thought that was a lot!

Crazysexycool is that 13ozs over the day (ie 5 sessions) or in 1 session?? My lb is 8 weeks and I'm only getting 3 ozs max in the morn and about 1 oz when I pump at night, can I increase this? I use the medela swing pump, also if nothing coming out should I leave pump on for few mins to stimulate milk?? Sorry for hijacking thread Smile

I started expressing this week with an avent manual pump & I typically get 1-2oz per session. But I can't seem to build up a store of milk as lo is 4wks old & feeds every 2hrs so I can't find enough time in the day! She will easily take the 4oz I eventually manage to express. I'm wanting to move on to exclusively ebf but how on earth am I going to express all that she needs? - underestimated that issue!

Kellymom has an excellent section on expressing.

When ds2 was a few weeks old and I was exclusively expressing, I could get about 3oz per breast per session (10 mins). Now that I'm feeding directly and just expressing occasionally for time away/stocking the freezer for returning to work (he's 23 weeks), I can get about 3-4 oz total in around 20 mins. I usually express just before I go to bed, which is a few hours after his last feed.

The more you do it, the more you'll get, but do be careful you don't overstimulate your supply and end up with oversupply and therefore risking mastitis. You should find that expressing the same time each day makes your body "expect it" and therefore produce more milk at that time.

Actually, output tends to decrease as the baby gets older (unless you are exclusively pumping)

The kellymom site is really good, there's an article here which explains the "normal" amount you can expect to pump and also why it suddenly goes down at around 3 months. (This is nothing to worry about!)

YoniBottsBumgina · 19/09/2013 12:17

Purple look on kellymom at the articles under "exclusive pumping" - that's what it tends to be called in the US where it's much more common than it is here, hence more US sites have comprehensive info on it if you were trying to research :)

I used to double pump when I worked and typically got 10-12oz from both breasts per session (approx 10mins). That was pretty much replacing missed feeds though from 4m. When I was building up the first stash I got around 5-6oz from the side I wasn't feeding from at 3m.

CrazySexyCool123 · 19/09/2013 19:29

Twinnies- Yes that's one session. The best one of the day. I don't remember how much I made at the time (DS is 7m) but yes I would recommend to carrying on pumping for a bit after. My best sessions are 3am and 7am. Keep your fluids up. It makes a real difference.

CrazySexyCool123 · 19/09/2013 19:36

I didn't make enough to start a freezer supply until 4 months. I now get 35-45oz a day but if I could bf,I would.
