Info needed on stopping bfing

I have looked everywhere for info on the what happens when you stop bfing and all I have found is advice on how to cope with the symptoms. DS has self weaned and is now fully on formula and I am on day two of stopping expressing or offering feeds etc. yesterday I was in pain, today is better. What I would like to know is what is happening to my breasts, in a biological sense. Obviously the milk is still in there as they feel full. Over the next few days what happens to that milk, how long does it usually take to dry up, how does that happen etc.

Also what signals the milk to begin drying up, I presume that's hormone based? Yesterday in the bath I didn't have let down which I usually do with the hot water and I haven't had one since despite holding DS close and him crying etc so does this mean that the process is underway or is that a physiological disconnection on my part?

Would just like to understand what is going on with my body. TIA

did you stop feeding/expressing suddenly or drop feed by feed?

if you stopped suddenly you need to be careful of getting mastitis. but if you dropped feed by feed then yes your breasts will know that you have stopped feeding and stop producing milk. sorry I'm can't tell you more specific details but I hope this helps Smile

I dropped feed by feed as much as poss as DS started refusing the breast. Feeling better today, no pain although they still feel full. Still can't seem to find more info anywhere online, it's all just people advocating cabbage leaves and ice packs.
