Thrush & clotrimazole cream

My GP has prescribed clotrimazole cream for my nipples for thrush. Baby has got nystan oral medicine.

Does anyone know if you are supposed to wash off the clotrimazole before feeding baby? GP said not, but its got 'for external use only' plastered all over the tube.

I did ask for fluconazole after being recommended on previous thread, but she refused to prescribe because not licensed.

Yes, I'm afraid you do. I used to hate that part!

i recently got fluconazole prescribed for thrush. the practice nurse looked at the big book to see its compatibility with bf and it gets thru milk in small amts but they all do. just because some gets thru doesn't mean they shouldn't prescribe it.

you can also get fluconazole over the counter, i found out once i took the prescription to the pharmacy. I bought it without the prescription because it was cheaper that way. if you want it, go to the chemist, ask for it it tablet form. if they query what for and how to use it, well, you know where else you can get thrush too and you can read the instructions yourself.

i ended up using the clotrimazole externally too - recommended by the nurse - to tackle it externally and internally. gives a better chance of getting rid of it once and for all.

I used to apply the cream on the nipple I had just fed from, so by the time I was getting around to feeding from that side again, the cream had disappeared. My GP said there was no need to wash it off. I suppose I only would if I had just applied it and ds wanted to go back on the same side immediately.

Just re-read your post - what are your symptoms? If you have pain in the breast, then the thrush is likely to have entered the milk ducts, which is what you need the fluconazole for. If you haven't already seen this , I would print it off and show it to your GP. It also says on this leaflet that there's no need to wash off the cream unless it's still visible on the nipple when you are about to feed. Good luck with getting rid of it

hi thanks for the replies - I have seen that leaflet before tatties, but hadnt remembered the bit about the cream. Feel reassured now.

no pain in breast just in nipple itself and baby's mouth seems uncomfortable, although this could be teething
