weaning off formula top ups

Hi all. I am new to mumsnet and just wanted some advice. My baby is 5 weeks old. As my milk didnt come in she lost a lot of weight we were told we had to top up with formula at the end of each breast feed. I am trying to reduce how much formula i give now but it is hard. My milk is better but she is rarely satisfied with a breast feed. If she falls asleep she is fine but if she stays awake she is very restless and literally 10 mins later she cries and roots for more food or sometimes it is continuous so i feed her constantly for 2 or 3 hours. She is latched well and is swallowing. Eventually i get so fed up i give formula and she is fine, she will sleep or stay awake and play. I was originally hoping to exclusively breast feed but I am not anti-formula as it is convenient and she seems to be thriving but would like to get to the stage where i only give a bottle when i am out and maybe last thing at night and do breast the rest of the time. I can't express any significant quantities so ive stopped doing it as it was depressing me. I dont really wish to start again. I am happy to feed a lot but i need breaks of at least 20-30 mins at least a few times a day so i can shower etc. i find it is better when i am out as she sleeps in the pushchair which stretches feeds but it means i can not get anything done at home. Unfortunately i do not have much support with cooking and housework for numerous reasons. Any advice will be helpful. My questions are:Why is she rarely settled after breast feed even though i have milk now?How can i reduce top ups without expressing and affecting her weight gain? Thanks.

Hello I had this with my dd, I mix fed for numerous reasons and wanted to go back to exclusive bfing.

I did this but it took a while!! By about 12 weeks dd didn't need topping up or any formula.

I think my advice would be to bf as much as poss and def reduce the top ups, there will be a cross over period where it feels like all you do is feed for 48 hours but your milk should then start increasing. I also found making sure I drank loads and upped my calorie intake seemed to help.

If your dd takes a bottle it might be useful to have in your mind that at least one feed (the bedtime one is a good one) will be the bottle feed iyswim.

Hi new mum, congratulations on your baby!

You've said that your baby seems dissatisfied a lot after a breastfeed. That can sometimes be a sign that she's not getting to your milk as well as she could be, so is feeling frustrated and hungry. I wonder if it is worth getting her latch checked again as it may be that a small adjustment in her latch is all that's needed to make sure she's reaching your milk efficiently and getting all that she needs. Sometimes as they get bigger their latch can change a bit so even if it was fine at the beginning it might just need a quick check now...Are there any breastfeeding groups near you that you could get along to?

I also recommend the Breastfeeding Network Supporterline, it's staffed by trained breastfeeding mums and is really helpful.0300 100 0210, open 9.30 till 9.30.

Is she your only child? Would it be a possibility just to spend a day with lots of skin to skin contact, feeding her as much as possible to get your supply to where you want it to be so you can reduce the formula you're giving her - it's called a babymoon!

Take care,
Caroline

Hello, I'm in the same situation with my 1month old.
I found this page on kellymom which seems useful. The key is to take it really slowly. My health visitor recommended pumping to up supply, so I'm trying that too (although exhausting so we'll see for how long)
