At what age did your child self weaning?

My DS is 19 months and showing no signs of wanting to stop. I'm not desperate to stop bf and in many ways it is a very useful parenting tool Wink. However I'd like to know that there is an end in sight especially as he hurts me more and more with his front teeth and most of the time I'm quite uncomfortable. He doesn't bite me but his latch is such that he digs in my nipple with his front teeth and leaves teeth marks.
So can you tell me at what age did your child self wean?

about 25 months. Preceeded by a week of stopping then a few weeks more feeding then done. We had gone never offer never refuse overnight and it tailed off quite soon after the night weaning. It was kind of nice and kind of sad.

8 months or so? Just lost interest and I didn't push him...

Faverolles · 02/09/2013 22:03

Ds is 32 months and not showing any signs yet.

TruthSweet · 03/09/2013 00:44

Dd1 was 3y6m
Dd2 was 4y9m
Dd3 was 3y and a week or so
Dd4 is 11m and going strong.

All have self weaned.

DS is 3.4 and last fed about 3 weeks ago (time before was 3 weeks before that; I was amazed there was any milk left!). He's been (very) gradually self-weaning for about six months, I'd say.

Have you tried taking him off if he hurts you, explaining why, then re-latching?

bimbabirba · 03/09/2013 09:00

Wow TS truly impressive!
I have tried to take him off, tell him and then carry on but it's touch and go, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's only his front teeth that are the problem.
Anyone has the same or any magic tip? Smile

All of mine have done the 'tooth imprints' / 'grazing' thing when they have their teeth for a bit and also when ill. I found that doing big open mouths and encouraging them to drop their jaw helped. Also nipple flip helped get a deeper latch at times. Didn't always work and they did grow out of the grazing.

DS completely lost interest at about 7 months. I was a bit gutted - I loved our snuggly bf time!

poocatcherchampion · 03/09/2013 12:17

yes I have that teeth thing. dd1 is 17mo. she isn't biting it is just a bit clampy and not helped by my sensitive from a newborn nipples.

I've successfully fed her lying down in bed a couple of mornings and that is a much more comfortable position.

no clue on the weaning here. not got there.

My dd1 was about 11 months when she got bored although we lasted for a year (I didn't want to faff about with bottles and sterilising etc)
Dd2 stopped just after her 3rd birthday but it was more my decision. She is now 3.9 and would be happy to continue. She is a bit boob obsessed!
