Make your own washable breastpads?

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 11:59

I'm wondering if anyone has done this, cos the ones I bought are getting really tatty and I'd like some pretty new ones.
So shallow! but why not!

So, what do you use to fill them? And what material would be best for the covers?

I would imagine that you could use the same principle as reusable nappies.

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:16

Which is what?
I've got some pure cotton material in a lovely stripe print, but surely normal wadding won't do the job?

OP posts:
shazronnie · 19/06/2006 12:29

how about a sandwich of wadding and terry towelling?

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:33

Terry towelling, of course!

Thanks for that, I'll soon be flashing snazzy breastpads in a coffee shop near you

\link{http://www.angelfire.com/biz/mothershelpinghands/mypatt.html\here's a description of how to make your own!}

SoupDragon · 19/06/2006 12:36

Or microfibre cloths - obv not natuaral fabric though.

You do, of course, realise that your lovely stripe print will show through your clothes?

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:37

nah, I only wear black tops since the birth! I'll be rocking the goth look this summer!

Grin thanks for that link, 'the frugal baby pattern' how funny.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 19/06/2006 12:39

I bought some enviromentally frienly ones which had lovely little leaf patterns on the outside. I can't wear them with white - why did they not just print a target on them and be done with it? They scream "Look here! Look at these!" :o

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:41

haha, well they have to put leaves on, to show that, y'know, it's 'green' and all.

shazronnie · 19/06/2006 12:45

tissy that link is v interesting, but i will not be making my own sanitary pads thank you!

(just going to kinit some tampons - I am a modern girl!!) Grin

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:45

To be honest the ins and outs of breastfeeding have been the only thing that has stopped me from getting P.N.D. I swear.

From forgetting to put pads on, then happily swanning around the shops only to notice milk dribbling down my stomach and jeans, or absentmindedly whipping it out on a packed bus not quite remembering to be dicreet in the rush to soothe the baby.
Or of course the gush during sex at a moment when you should be oh so serious, but it's impossible. haha.

You have to laugh at it.

shazronnie · 19/06/2006 12:45

knit not kinit!

SoupDragon · 19/06/2006 12:47

... answering the door with one breast hanging out?

Did hold a conversation with a mad who'd done some tree work for me without noticing that I had my vest top pulled down under one breast. Luckily the bra was done up...

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 12:54

Haha soupdragon
Thats too funny! Bet the poor guy didn't know where to look.

One of my 'triumphs' was spending ages adapting new tops to make them feeding friendly (have you seen whats available in the shops!?) then absentmindedly sewing up the flaps i'd just spent ages making on them whilst 'finishing them off'.
It took me a good couple of weeks before I could bear to look at the damn sewing machine again to actually sort them out.

Luckily his wife had breastfed their DS so I figure he understood completely :o

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 13:18

I have a feeling I'm going to like this forum, a lot!
Why have I been languishing between 'bounty' and 'mumsonline' for so long!?

UniSarah · 19/06/2006 14:07

I knew I'd mislaid one breastpad, we had friends round for dinner, half way through the evening I spotted the missing item under a chair. duh. i figured they would ignore it if i did, she had breast fed her son till recently.
not sure about making my own tho, i rather like the waterproof backing of the ones i use. tho now i'm not leaking so much maybe i could see if my sewing machiune skills will stretch that far

Jasnem · 19/06/2006 14:13

Reusable breast pads ...dp has just removed four from the pump of my dead washing machine.Blush
Really not worth it.

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 14:24

I had reusables at first, my husband used the leftovers as a filter in our coffee machine, and they worked quite well!

OP posts:
titneyspears · 19/06/2006 14:25

you can buy waterproofed material, it's a nylon/cotton mix, thats what i plan to use, I'll let you all know if mine work out!

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 19/06/2006 14:28

dd2 likes to grab hold of the breastpad while feeding and frisbee them across the room to the delight of unsuspecting onlookers.
hello titney good name Smile

spots · 19/06/2006 14:31

oh don't use wadding... totally non absorbent, just spun plastic! microfibre or terry towelling far better.

titneyspears · 19/06/2006 14:48

Harpischordcarrier (darn what a long name!) that is so funny. I hope they are soggy and give good squelch to the unsuspecting victim. mwuhahahahaa.

Spots, you are right about wadding. My plan is to do 3 layers of terry, one of waterproof fabric. With pretty fabric on both sides
