What are the signs that a baby needs weaning? When did you start yours?

I am interested in knowing when people think it's a good idea to start a baby on solids. My baby is 18 weeks old, weighs about 16 pounds and is exclusively breastfed. She sleeps pretty well (7-6 for the last week. Fingers now crossed that this is it) and is generally pretty content.

So why do I want to start her? Partly because she's stopped sleeping for two hours at lunchtime unless fed half way through. She never used to get hungry in between. Also, she watches my food quite intently now. And also, I must admit because I think it might be cute to see her eat. Am I mad? What age did you start yours? Is 16 pounds heavy and might she be hungry...etc etc. All advice gratefully received

It will still be cute in 8 weeks.

I thought my dd was really interested at 5 months - I held on til nearly 6, and she was interested in MY food - but not in her own. It was just the novelty of watching me eat. I don't think watching food intently is a sign of being ready to wean, that's just the age.

What a great job you are doing raggletaggle exclusively breastfeeding her. The health benefits of continuing that to 6 months outweighs starting solids because it looks cute. She will intently watch what you eat - that is a normal phase. The fact sge sleeps so well at night is brilliant too. Starting solids can actually disrupt that.Leave well alone is my advice

I was convinced ds2 was ready hes 23 weeks I think. So a couple of days ago I tried him on a tiny bit of pureed pear and since then hes been unsettled and can't sleep. I'm going to leave it for a couple of months.
I have a question, sorry to hijack. Does ds2 need water now or is bm still enough.

mears · 14/02/2004 16:14

BM is enough. Well done

Thanks Mears, thanks everybody. Have decided to leave it until she's 6 months, as per advice. Really agree that it will still be cute in 6 weeks time and it would be nice if she could sit up properly in a high chair
