Hi everyone
I've not posted a discussion before and now need your advice! I'm breastfeeding my 6 month boy have decided to give him a bottle of formular a day as I have to go back to work and want to wean him really slowly.

I've not been able to do this away from home yet as I've no idea how to!! Someone I know takes her bottlesa all pre-prepared but I thought you're not supposed to do that? How do you keep them sterilised? Advice please!!

I never bottlefed myself but if I did I would sterilize the bottles, fill them with water, then take the right amount of powder and mix when the bottle is needed - feed at room temperature.

What do you mean away from the house? At 6 months I really wouldn't worry too much about bottles being sterile. So yes give them a good wash and if you want sterilise them initially but then I wouldn't worry. If you are not going to be out for long or are spending time at a mates you can take a bottle with you and either use it as required or stick it in your friend's fridge for a couple of hours.

If you are on a full day out and worry about the milk going off you can either buy a carton of readymade formula and just pour it into the bottle at the required time. Or the cheaper option is to fill the bottle with the required amount of water. Measure out the formula and take that in a container and then just make up the bottle as and when. You can actually buy a special container with 3 compartments which you can fill with formula to make up 3 bottles during the day.

I make up bottles as normal and keep them in the fridge then if i go out i use a bottle carrier which is a cool bag. Otherwise sterilise a bottle but fill it with a ready made carton of milk when you are out. Obviously only the first suggestion works if its EBM your'e using!

I would agree with emkana. My friend bought little tubs which have 3 sections, where you put a measured amount of formula in. Anothe rfriend has bought a wee pot which actually sits within the bottle (empty) hanging from the rim, but as this takes up space in the bottle, she takes a flask of water.

Once I shifted to formula, I used to make up the bottles with the boiled water last thing at night and leave them to cool overnight on top of the fridge - if you put in the water and then put the lid firmly on, it won't lose its sterilisation. Then I had a container (you can get them in Mothercare/Boots) with 3 compartments, and I'd dish out the right amount of scoops into the compartments. Then if I needed to do a feed while we were out, I would empty the compartment into the water, shake it, and Bob's your uncle. DS never minded that it wasn't heated - was lukewarm. Dead easy.
