bad pain while bottle feeding

Hi everyone,
my LO has terrible wind which upsets him only when he eats. He is bottle fed (expressed and formula), and we are now using dr browns anti colic bottles with size 2 teats which seem to be ok for him. He is now 11 weeks old and it is a constant battle to get him to eat enough- he squirms, screams, resists in every way. he works himself up into a hysterical state from the pain, but seems totally fine when he's not eating. We assume it is wind as he seems to have a constant stream of farts while he eats and he writhes around quite a bit. Him being so upset makes him swallow more air, im' sure. We did try gaviscon thinking it might be reflux, but he isn't sick and it didn't do much after after the first few tries.

He has had his tongue tie fixed, and we've been taking him to an osteopath who says he has a 'sloppy suck', which may be why he is taking in so much wind. We've tried infacol ,gripe water, dentinox (not at the same time), and colief. nothing seems to make much of a difference. We feel like we are force feeding him!

He is now losing weight and i am worried. the GP and the HV both say it's colic and it will pass. Well, he used to cry constantly with colic and wind and that has improved significantly. I'm taking him back to the GP later today as i'm getting desperate!

Any hints, tips, suggestions, anything? I seem to spend most feeding times crying as much as he is!

By eating I assume you mean drinking milk. I would want to check for:
Is the tongue tie definitely gone?
Is it (silent) reflux?
Is he ok with the formula: is there lactose / CMPI intolerance?

I'd suspect silent reflux. Have a look in YouTube. There are some very informative (though heart-rending) videos of babies with this condition. Good news is that it's very treatable and they grow out of it.

Oh, gaviscon is ok, but was not enough for DS. Who also was never actually sick. Ranitidine worked a treat.

Thanks bonzo77. I'm pretty sure the tongue tie is gone; it was very obvious before and now he moves his tongue about all over the place. i wonder if it could be silent reflux. He does seem quite raspy and doesn't nap as well as he used to. I tended to think it was wind as he gulps for England while he drinks, but he is completely fine in between feeds- if it was wind i would think it would affect him more frequently. He used to have windy attacks and this seems different.

I will be asking the doctor about this, and about a possible intolerance as well.

In the meantime, if anyone has any tips about bottle feeding, especially when your child tends to swallow a lot of air, i would appreciate them!!
