Had a big work-do last night and I'm wondering whether I should b/f 5 week old this morning. She has bottle top-ups anyway after each feed so I just gave her the formula bottle first thing this morning given my concern about lots of alcohol still in my system. Can I b/f her later? how long does it take alcohol to clear out of your system?

Also, having not had any caffeine during pregnancy, I'm now enjoying large cafetieres of coffee each day. I know this isn't very good for me but is it ok to b/f while doing this?

Forgive me, I haven't read all posts.

Last week my hv said she rekoned (sp) it takes an houe per unit to expell alcohol.. But my dr said a while back that what you drink hits your breastmilk 12 hours later. Dr has bf 3 children, hv has had none FWIW HTH

Doc has it totally wrong - honestly, what a thing to say to mothers! Alcohol gets into the milk (not much, though) at the same rate as it gets into the blood ie very quickly. It leaves the milk at the same rate as it leaves the blood ie at the rate of about one unit per 60-90 mins.

I may have it wrong again. This was 10 months ago. Head all over the place at 6wk check...only wanted to know can I purlease have a drink...?!

Must admit I drink and bf all the time, I don't get legless but regularly have 1-3 glasses of wine and feed them, but usually this is in the evening and then they don't get fed until the morning.

I have never noticed any doziness on their part. I want to bf them for as long as they want, but don't want to put my life completely on hold for them either.

Quite overrun.
I was able to have a completely normal life through 3 1/2 years of b/feeding.

Glad to hear it Moondog! Also developed a taste for Guinness on advice of HV, to build my iron levels up after birth, have since read that this is a bit of a myth. Never mind hey!!

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:50

They used to prescribe Guinness to p/g women I think! (Unless it's an urban myth.)

Overrun · 04/07/2006 21:51

I've read that to, but I didn't really drink at all in pregnancy, tried to drink a glass of wine occasionally and just couldn't finish it. My taste for it went, luckily it's all come back now!

mears · 04/07/2006 21:52

No, it isn't a myth. I remember Sweetheart Stout being given to women to boost their milk production - and that was when they were inpatients! I got some in myself when i had problems expressing for preterm baby on ventilator!

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:52

My taste for it never went.
Unfortunately.
It was tough being sober all that time....

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:53

Great!!

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:53

Overrun · 04/07/2006 21:57

This is serendipity, there is a woman on another thread asking how to up her milk supply for a 7 week baby, just told her about the Guinness

Overrun · 04/07/2006 21:58

Just realised that you have seen that thread as well, aren't we all busy tonight? I'm going to sign off now, as I am a big Lost fan

Yes they were breastfgeeding. So was I. Nothing wrong with a wee drink for the letdown reflex IMO
