Oral thrush won't shift, 3 months and counting!!

Hi guys! LO is mixed fed and he has had oral thrush for 3 months of his 4 months of life. Have had months of docs appointments and have been given nystatin and dactarin numerous times with little effect. Changed his bottles on docs advice. Didn't work (grrrrrr to that bit of advice as 6 bottles aren't cheep when you already have perfectly fine ones already!) at a bit of a loss as docs seem to fob us off and LO is getting more and more fussy when BF and seems to be uncomfortable feeding at the boob. Want to sort it fast as my supply is dwindling and don't want to have to give up BF because of this! Already gone from 1 bottle a day to 3. Any tried and tested advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! ;-)

Stupid q from me, apologies, but have you been treated as well?

MyNameIsAnAnagram · 22/08/2013 13:16

Are you being treated too? You will just be continually re-infecting him if not. The bfn (breastfeeding network) have a great leaflet on thrush treatment if you google it.

Vickiet85 · 22/08/2013 13:22

No I'm not. I mentioned that last appointment as I thought it seemed pointless treating his mouth then shoving him back on my boob which is probably covered in it despite washing between feeds. She asked me if I was sore or rather, I said no so she said I didn't need it. Surely I could be re infecting him even though I haven't got the infection myself? Think a talk to the Gp is in order! Glad u were both thinking the same!

My Dd had oral thrush as I'd had ab's during labour. I also had ductal thrush so it was awful all round. I tried Nystatin which did not work and in the end phone La Leche League. The lady gave me great advice even though they were told not to give it anymore due to salt, but it worked quickly.

This is what I did and I've C&P'd it from an old thread.

I got rid of my Dd's oral thrush by dabbing with a cotton bud, small amounts of bi carb solution on her white mouth spots. The meds the doc gave did not do anything other than make her face spotty. I used vingar solution applied with cotton wool pads every day after my shower, then after every feed followed by Clomtrimozole cream. This advice was all given by La Leche League, but she did say it wasn't official any longer due to the salt aspect of bi carb. It was such a small amount though, that I and she didn't see a problem. There wasn't and it sorted the problem quite quickly.
I had thrush in my breasts rather than on them btw.

Just put a tiny pinch of bi carb into warm water and mix so that it dissolves as much as possible, then use a cotton bud (clean one for each dab) and dip and put on the affected spots in the mouth.
It works really quickly (couple to three days as I recall). and do it 3-5 times a day.

Gah, yes, you both need treatment. Poor you, ghastly knowledge from medics. I am so cross for you.

Even nhs website says the mother can have thrush and be symptomless, so both need to be treated.

Me and my ds have it at 2 weeks. Desperately hoping the Daktarin will work for us. it's me who has the symptoms and breast feeding now feels like being stabbed in the boob.

Thanks everyone, great advice and good luck sunflower, I'm sure you'll have more luck than us sam had it a while before I realised what it was, I just assumed it was milk on his tongue, his is a severe case apparently.Off out to get baking soda when he wakes up from his nap. Thanks for the advice! Oh also decidedto tell a white lie about myself to the docs (naughty I know) and told them my nips where sore. Didn't want to be sent away with nothing for be myself again and be carrying on the re infecting cycle!

bicarbonate of soda.
