I know it's been done before, but...milk over a year old...

My DD is eight months old, and I'm back at work full time. Since I have been back at work, I have been expressing every lunch, so my DD has a b.feed in the morning, 12-15oz expressed milk during the day and then two further b.feeds from me at home. During the weekends she's fully b.fed

I am finding all the expressing etc very tiring but want to keep up until she is a year old, and then I'd like to drop down to just doing a morning feed and evening feed.

However, what milk should she then have when she is a year old? Should she be drinking milk in the day? What is better, cows milk or growing up milk?

TIA

elf, i breastfeed ds til 13mths, just morn and even, then stopped and he hasnt touched milk (cow) since and isnt interested in it. i have no qualms regarding this as now "they" milk is not as important at that young age but more at 13 orso. this i heard on womens hour , a professor of XX talking.

IME she will prob just go without; although you may have to reduce the amount rather than cut it out straightaway. 12 oz is quite alot, and she won't need that as she eats more solids. She will be fine on water during the day, and she could have a yogurt for pudding at lunchtime too.

skipped a few words there, himself arrived to pull me off the computer, hope u get my jist.
after they, it should read - now think -

so if I continue to b.feed & express until she's a year old, then drop to the morn and eve feed (which I dont mind) she will be okay with water in the week?

hermykne, I got the gist!

shazronnie - I send 12-15oz but have started being sent home with a few oz. She has a big bowl of breakfast, she has a big dinner & youghrt for lunch, some fruit and then some dinner with us. Dont know where she puts it all though, she's only just got to 18lbs at 8 & 1/2 months!

no they still need more milk than that - one pint is the recommendation but would include cheese yogurts or milk used for cooking

shazronnie · 15/06/2006 20:25

she sounds like a lovely baby! My DS2 could eat more than his older brother (aged 2) at 9mths.

Agree with hana - 1 pint is recommended, but I meant 12 oz is a big bottle on top of 3 breastfeeds.

hermykne · 15/06/2006 20:36

hana my ds doesnt take any milk at all, and this isnt a problem health wise, he takes a lump of cheese and an odd yogurt and in cooking i use dairy, thew 1pint doesnt have to be straight milk, calcium can come from other forms, plus too much dairy can cause adenoid problems etc, mucus stuff etc.

hermykne · 15/06/2006 20:38

i suppose i should say, my ds has a balanced diet, and eats well.

milk can decrease an appetite, as it lines the stomach and lies there thus decreasing appetite in children as well as taste.

hana · 15/06/2006 20:39

i did say that it doesnt' have to be milk exclusively tho

Elf1981 · 15/06/2006 21:09

so at 12 months I am okay to use cows milk during the day (if she prefers that to water etc) or should it be growing up milk?
She'll still be getting milk from me twice a day.

cows milk would be find
the growing up milk is just formula companies trying to hold on to customers by making them believe it's better than cows milk -fotified witih vitamins etc etc
with a balanced diet the cows milk is fine (along with your bm as well!)

shazronnie · 16/06/2006 08:18

cow's milk should not be their main drink before 12 mths, so it is ok to let them drink a cup a day.

moondog · 16/06/2006 08:42

I didn't express Elf (too hard for me) with first but she wasn't having any b/milk in the day during week form this age-just water, juice and ordinary milk on cereal, also yoghurt and cheese.
Continued tyo b/feed for 30 mths.

hermykne · 16/06/2006 12:43

sorry hana - i was typing very quickly Smile

Seona1973 · 16/06/2006 13:33

from one year anything between 12-20 ounces is considered ok. This can be made up from milk with cereal, in foods/cooking and in dairy products like cheese, yoghurt, etc. They dont have to take much as a drink as long as they have other sources of the same nutrients. Cows milk is fine from 1 year.
