6 day old fussing during cluster feeds

So DD is 6 days old and cluster feeding in the evening. I'm finding it tough to be honest, despite DD having a good latch my nipples hurt (this is improving though)

My new issue is DD gets REALLY fussy during the feeding. Arms going everywhere, fighting going on the breast (and its hard enough to get her on my right breast when she's not fighting it), she'll cry while on the breast and jump on and off.

Any advice on how to calm her down? It lasts for a few hours and its hard watching her being upset.

Maybe try biological nurturing? www.llli.org/btissue5pg04

That looks good maja, don't have time to read properly right now but will tomorrow.

How are things now Helga?

BaldricksTurnip · 18/08/2013 10:49

Is she swallowing air mid feed? Might be worth sitting her up and winding her if she seems unable to settle at the breast, then re latching.

Lots of good advice on here already, just thought of some things that might help. Try googling youtube tiger in the tree. Bits a good technique for getting wind up.

Also, google youtube Richard and judy happiest baby. This is a great technique for soothing crying babies. Maybe if everything is getting a little fraught you could get someone else to do this, if you have someone, while you have a couple of minutes to yourself in another room?

Is this bobbing on and off just in the evening? Have you tried biological nursing and has it helped?

Have you spoken to your mw and have you read Feeding your newborn: what to expect in the early weeks and Custer feeding and fussy evenings?

Has she been checked for tongue tie?

HelgatheHairy · 18/08/2013 11:52

She's still quite bad. We've tried skin to skin, biological nurtering and swaddling. The only thing that helps is walking around with her.

I'm wondering if it could be colic? She seems to pull her legs up quite a bit. She also farts a bit? Not sure if that's connected to anything.

She hasn't been checked for tongue tie.

DH takes her to wind her to give me a tiny break.

Sorry trying to remember what else you asked - I have read that kellymom article but it definitely lasts longer than an hour and seems worse than mentioned in that article.

When do you next see the mw? Could you give them a call?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/08/2013 15:07

Oh and fishes pulling up her legs and farting, that's not necessarily a sign there is something wrong.

Did you manage to call the mw? What did she say?

Could you get to a bfing group too? Try the lll. They should be able to observe a complete feed and check for tongue tie.

There are some good bfing videos here.

Dint forget to google the Richard and judy video, better still get DH to google it Smile

If she's, not fishes. Bloody ipad.

I'm in Ireland, there's no midwife support once you leave the hospital. I will be seeing GP next Friday but I've been googling and found a lactation consultant and will try and get an appointment with her.

She's actually got quite a good latch (as far as is can tell) and is lovely and calm except when she turns into my little gremlin!

We've tried the tiger in the tree hold as well and she seemed to like it!

Its good that she likes the tiger in the tree, a shame you don't get any mw support though.

Here's the link for la Leche league ireland. Hopefully they can help and maybe advise you on where to get the tongue tie checked.

Helga how are things today?

HelgatheHairy · 19/08/2013 20:24

Last night was the worst yet. She screamed whenever I tried to put her down. She usually latches on no problem when I'm lying down but she just screamed and wouldn't latch on. The only way she settled was like biological nurtering but with her sideways across me rather than up and down.

Today she's being brilliant feeding and sleeping. I got on touch with the lactation consultant and she's coming out Wednesday morning.

Sorry, not been on here for a few days. Glad you had a bit of a better day on Monday, even if Sunday night was bad. Hope everything goes well with the LC today too Smile
