Hi, I'm a bit embarrassed about this....but here goes.
DH and I had a bit of an accident today with a burst condomBlush
Anyway I have a 4 month old DS who is EBF. I think I am probably covered from a contraception point of view due to breastfeeding ( he feeds regularly, through the night and AF has not returned yet)....but we discussed it and decided we would rather make sure so I headed to the chemist for the MAP. Anyway I know they say it is safe to take when breasfeeding but the label states to reduce the amount DS is exposed to I could avoid feeding him for 6 hours. I wondered if anyone else has experience of this?
I took it about 2 hours ago, have just finished expressing ( and dumping milk) and baby has had 1st bottle of formula ( he took about 75mls). He will probably need fed again in 2 hours and I was planning to breastfeed him. What do you think?

I should also say that we might want another DC at some time in the future....but not quite at this time!

If it was levonelle, there is no need to interrupt breastfeeding at all. www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/dibm/Emergency_Hormonal_Contraception_and_Breastfeeding_March_2009.pdf

As you suggest, with a baby under 6m feeding frequently and with no intervals longer than 5hrs at any point and with no returned period - you were very likely to be fine anyway. I can understand the desire to be extra safe however.

Levonelle talk about the fact mothers 'may wish to reduce exposure' but there is no studies to suggest there is a risk or a need to do so. The Infant risk centre in the US which uses data from Dr Thomas Hale's team has no mention of risk. Levonelle took the step to get a licence for breastfeeding women to take their drug - the fact they did that indicates they had to feel pretty confident about the research available to them. Plenty of safe drugs don't get around to getting a licence.

If it was ellaOne (ulipristal), Wendy Jones in her book "Breastfeeding and Medication" suggests more caution (she is also reinforces the fact Levonelle is fine). There is no data on Ulipristal.

If it was another drug, I'd be happy to look it up for you.

Thanks Tambajam! I've just googled DrThomas Hale ( had never heard of him) and it sounds more reassuring. It was levonelle 1500 I took so I think it should be ok. I will go ahead and breasfeed when DS needs his next feed.
Still can't believe I've had to take the morning after pill today...bloody condoms!

Sounds wise to me :) Dr Thomas Hale is a legend in this area. When it comes to drugs, you can also find a lot of information on the Breastfeeding Network website and even call the Drugs in Breastmilk helpline if you'd like to speak to someone.

Hello,
I’ve just came across your post.
I had to take Levonelle and currently breastfeeding my two month old baby. I only managed to wait 4 hours without breastfeeding and baby wouldn’t take formula milk so ended up breastfeeding him four hours post ingestion of Levonelle.

I wonder if you observed any side effects on your baby when you resume feeding or if he showed any ill health as a child.

@Mimis55A the OP's child will now be 10 years old so she may not remember! But the links above suggest no need to even wait with Levonelle.
