Breast feeding with mahosive boobs!

froubylou · 14/08/2013 18:09

Sounds silly I know BUT I remember when feeding DD 9 years ago that with my big knockers it was difficult to get the right position for us both. And I gave up last time at about 2 months because it was so difficult to get us comfy. I did get the expressing right so could use a bottle when my nips got really sore.

Any tips from any mums out there with big boobs on getting a good position in mind?

I'm only 21/22 weeks so it's a way away yet but am worrying about this now, especially being titsaflingo if B/F in public. Want to do a minimum of 6 months this time if possible.

TIA.

Cushions! Lots of 'em! I found the best ones were memory foam.

Good luck!

rubyslippers · 14/08/2013 19:36

Rugby ball hold

Meringue33 · 14/08/2013 19:39

Cushions and pillows. I have been known to shove a few in bottom of pram and cart them about with me.

whatsaduckdo · 14/08/2013 19:39

I second the rugby ball hold.

I also have mahoosive boobs! Gave up feeding dd1 when she was 10 weeks due to pain from probably a rubbish latch but I fed baby dd for just over 6 months (only stopped because I was going back to work) with no pain whatsoever.

This time round I held her in the crook of the arm on side of was feeding then with the other hand supported my boob and positioned it so she could latch. When she was small I had to hold it pretty much the whole feed but as she got bigger (3 months+) I was able to just support to get her latched then let go. Found it easy to feed out and about this time, I never would have contemplated with dd1! I was wearing 38H nursing bras, using a tip from here of wearing a vest pulled down and a tshirt pulled up I managed to feed discretely despite the large norkage.

Good luck, it def can be done!

My method is similar to Whatever's. I sit down, cross my legs with the leg of the side I want to feed from on top, and then cradle bubba in that arm, resting on my leg. I latch on with help of the other hand to support/aim boon, but then I let go. Was initially paranoid about baby being able to breathe, but the amazing nursery nurse who showed me how to do this in hospital insisted I practiced freeing up my spare hand 'to give you your freedom' and demonstrated that shape of baby's nose meant she could never suffocate.

I feed in public like this, and can do it on any chair. Similar method also works cross legged on floor.

I do have a feeding cushion though - was handy in the early cluster feeding days to stop me getting a sore elbow. I could at a push feed on it at the dining table hands free with it(although always clear to grab her) which meant I managed to eat even when she wouldn't stop!

As well as the vest under top method, I also love H&M's feeding tops. I think getting a boob out of bra to feed is more of a hassle if you're big, these tops make it easier to do discreetly so they're what I wear if I know I'll be BFing in public in environments I can't control.

Thanks all. Just found it very difficult to get comfortable last time and then I would fidget and have to relatch and dd would get cross lol.

Think I may invest in one of those v shaped pillows and a spare pair of normal pillows for extra support. I also used to worry about her breathing lol.

Best place for nursing bras whilst we are discussing huge bazookas? Currently in a 38g. Usually around a 36f depending on brand. Know I may be bigger when my milk comes in but from memory only went up a cup size last time.

I'm currently wearing a Bravissimo own brand bra which is very comfortable.

TeaOperated · 14/08/2013 21:04

Bravissimo to get measured (although I guessed from fit of my pregnancy bras).

www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ has the best range I've seen and prices tend to be lowest, when you take free postage into account.

For sleep/early days boob settling down bras, this one is great www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ I'm wearing a 36HH at the moment and the largest size fits fine, as they stretch.

LoveBeingItsABoy · 14/08/2013 21:06

Pillows liked up to support under your arm, nipple flick into the mouth and off you go

ChunkyPickle · 14/08/2013 21:07

Yep, at home rugby hold, on a pillow to save my arms (sometimes with a rolled up towel propping boob - glamourous).

Once baby is a bit older/stiffer I went to lying down in bed (has the handy side effect that when older he didn't beg for feeds when out and about because feeds == lying down in bed for him), or if out then whatever I could manage without too much flashing.

I used the Royce ones from Bravissimo (alarmingly big enough to wear as a hat) - they were OK, but not brilliant.

nenevomito · 14/08/2013 21:08

J cup when feeding.

I used the rugby ball technique.

Baby on a cushion by my side getting to the boob from underneath, arm hugged around them.

froubylou · 14/08/2013 21:19

Thanks so much for that link Tea. Was worrying about getting bras big enough as I haven't seen any on the high street.

Will try and have a measure up using the method recommend on here and order a couple to try for size. Prices are pretty good too. I like the fantasie range from debenhams so used to paying at least £30 for upperdeckerflopperstoppers and don't mind as long as I'm comfy and supported and can whip em out as necessary!

Thank you all for your advice. As least I know it's possible now and can stop worrying.

Or at least find something else to worry about lol.

I got some really decent ones from the next shop

MrsMangoBiscuit · 14/08/2013 21:26

Does the rugby ball hold work if your nipples are high up? I think I had issues with the latch last time, due in about 4 weeks and my boobs have ballooned this time round! :( I seem to have star gazing nipples, so I'm worried I will have trouble again.

calilark · 14/08/2013 21:32

My little girl is 4 weeks old, my norks have gone from a 36GG to a 38K - Royce is the only brand that makes big enough nursing bras. bit of a PITA that I can't find any sleep bras big enough, need something to support at night so am wearing woefully inadequate size 20 sleep bras from Mothercare.

Need to have a practice at the whole vest/T-shirt combo to see about feeding in public, today I ended up legging it to Mothercare to use their feeding room as she got too worked up to take an expressed bottle. it's definitely harder with massive boobs, it takes 2 hands to wop one out in the first place, hence planning to use bottles out in public.

CaptainUndercrackers · 14/08/2013 21:34

I got one of these for out and about feeding, it's lasted through DS1 and am now using it for DS2. It's just a lot lighter and more portable than the usual pillows, and you can sling it over your shoulder like a handbag. Baby lies on pillow and latches on, and I always hold my boob in place during feeds. As he's getting bigger it's much easier though.

I highly recommend Anita underwired nursing bras for once your supply has settled down. They give you a normal shape as opposed to the monoboob look that nonwired bras have (32-34J so fairly big boobs here!)

Whatevertheweather · 14/08/2013 22:07

I also used nursingbrashop I got a couple of the underwired nursing bras. Made me feel so much better, never feel properly supported in the non-wire ones.

With the breathing - once dd was latched I gently tilted her chin a little so I could see she had plenty of breathing room. Oh and yes to cross legged feeding

RememberingMyPFEs · 15/08/2013 01:34

I have the same issue - 36H/I
Rugby ball hold works well but need 2 hands. I just got the My Breast Friend pillow that straps round the waist and it seems to help!

DD is only 17 days so I've not done much feeding in public yet but I got some great t-shirts from La Redoute that are good and the vest/t-shirt combo seems to work too!

As for bras. Bravado Bliss is great and very supportive for a non-wired
Good luck
