Underwired Nursing Bras

MNHQ have arranged a web-chat Q&A with Lisa Gardner, a bra-fitting expert at Bravissimo. There are already a few comments on the thread about underwired nursing bras - or rather lack of them, and so I thought I would post about it here too in case any of you wanted to add a comment.

The reason why there are so few is that they are not recommended to wear when feeding; they hold the breasts too firmly and you may well end up with more blocked ducts and other problems.

But that only really applies until the milk supply is settled, which takes a few months. WHO recommend feeding for 2 years and beyond - so that's at least 18 months of being able to wear an underwired bra, which in turn means being properly supported and getting some semblance of shape back. This is becomes even more important if you're big-busted. The argument is for more information, and the right to choose. And there are loads of underwired nursing bras out there - but for smaller cup sizes who are less likely to need them!

I got mastitis from my non-wired bra. :(

Anita do a fab underwired nursing bra which I wore from month 3 of bf. thank goodness - otherwise I had a terrible mono boob. Not a good look with a G chest!

I was a K-cup! :( Now you all know why I feel so strongly about this. It wasn't so bad at first because DS was born in February but when summer came around I just cried my eyes out. There was nothing I could wear.

I've since settled at a J-cup, am still feeding DS, and wear underwired bras all the time. I haven't had mastitis and look fine in strappy tops, t-shirts etc. The downside is that I frequently turn DS down for feeds as it's just not convenient to get my boobs out, so he's pretty much limited to mornings and evenings.
