Broken boob,help needed

Can anyone help me diagnose / fix this?
DC2 - 7 weeks in - feeding has been a dream - way easier than with DC1 though I managed over a year and had a good experience generally.
My only concern previously was possible fast letdown/ oversupply but this seemed minor and although DS possets a lot he is mainly content after a feed, sleeping well.

So - last couple of days it's all gone wrong on one side only...
Latch feels like DS has needles in his mouth - sharp scratchy ouchy. Settles down during feed but I dread the latching bit - cant really see obvious nipple damage. Nipple is quite red a different to rest of areaola.
Boobs feel itchy during and sometimes between feeds.
Getting some deep breast pain and burning / tingles between feeds- I have a painful let down and it is similar but not quite the same.

Does anyone have any advice / experience - I have read a lot and I guess it is some of the same symptoms as thrush ?
TIA

I don't know, having never experienced it myself, but i was going to suggest thrush.

I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be a along in a sec, but i would make an appointment with the gp (perhaps someone will advise you what you want the gp to prescribe too...).

Sounds like thrush - both you and baby need treating to break the cycle else you'll keep passing it back and forth - look in baby's mouth is there any white coating?? If so thrush is most likely!!!

Get an appt/prescription ASAP!!!

Liveinthepresent · 12/08/2013 12:58

Yes that's the only thing I can think of from reading around here..
Ironically I did go to the GP a couple of weeks ago thinking DS had thrush symptoms but was told it wasn't anything...
I have a GP appt already for 6 weeks checks on Wednesday - not sure if I should wait or try to be seen earlier .. Also if its thrush can I get something suitable over the counter.

I think gps can be funny about prescribing stuff if you are breastfeeding, which is ironic given it wouldn't be a problem if you weren't...

Hence my suggestion to find out what you want to be prescribed. I know there is something good, a friend who kept getting thrush told me, i just don't know what it is Blush.

Ok spoke to the GP I saw previously with DS and although I still think he didn't really believe me I have been prescribed Daktarin gel and Fluconazole tablets.
I think there is no harm even if this isn't thrush.

Can anyone tell me how best to use the Daktarin - there are no instructions for breastfeeding - am thinking best to apply after a feed. 4?x daily.

Also anyone who has had thrush how soon might things improve ?

I haven't had thrush, but I think this BFN leaflet is meant to be good - it's the one they have at the group I go to.

Liveinthepresent · 12/08/2013 22:44

RedKites'thank you so much for that - I saw it a couple of weeks ago when I was worrying about DS having symptoms and then I couldn't find it again over the weekend.
I am still slightly worried that it might not be thrush as I don't match all the symptoms - but I guess time will tell.

Interesting that the Daktarin gel is apparently likely to be ineffective on me - I may ask for the cream when I am there on Wednesday.

You poor thing. We had thrush - it is horrid. those little sharp stabbing needles you describe exactly!! There was no white is DS' mouth but he did have a nappy rash. In fact it is the only time he has had a nappy rash in his 14 months. it turns out that many nappy rashes are actually to do with a fungal infection - i wish i had learn that at my ante natal classes. That would have been very useful information.
The BFN leaflet linked to above is the most up to date advice & we followed it.

We also bought probiotics - I took some capsules and ate live yoghurt like it was going out of fashion. I bought some baby probiotic & prebiotic powder from a health food shop and applied it to my nipples before every feed. This was basically to bolster both our systems. I dont know if it helped or not but the thrush went away and we have not had it again.

Good luck with getting rid of it.

I had it and the agony was immense.
Be extra careful around hand washing. I took fluconazole and by dose two it was hugely better and gone by the third (I assume you have been given three tablets to take every other day?). You have my sympathy as it is agony..

Liveinthepresent · 14/08/2013 08:21

Thanks for the sympathy.
It feels much better - after 2 doses of the Fluconazole -one double and one single.
Does that sound realistic - or could it mean it wasn't thrush? Am off to GP again today for 6 weeks check so need to decide whether I need to ask for Daktarin cream.
Am now left with a rather traumatised nipple which is still making feeding a bit toe curling.. Have read on here how to help this heal but it is getting no better.
All through feeding DD I had nothing this painful - hats off to any first timers who endure this or worse with things like tongue tie!

Oh livingdownunder sorry I just reread your message so it's realistic that it is much better by dose 2 hurrah! Hope it won't come back.

sorry forgot to check back. hopefully you feel a lot better.
My nipples were agony and latching baby was so painful but now they're fine, which I didn't think was going to be possible after the carry on we'd had.

I also had a milk blister which meant clogged ducts and pain latching. It looked like a small white blister on my nipple, so tiny but apparenly can cause immense pain until gone. Check for this if you still have pain. I popped mine in a hot bath. Probably not ideal but the pain stopped after. I think official advice is to get baby to suck until it dislodges or express until it pops. But check.

Good luck.

This thread may now be dead but thanks for coming back downunder - I am pretty sure any thrush has gone - the only remaining issue is one cracked nipple.
I had the milk blisters with DC1 - it didn't seem so bad then as it was when I was back at work, feeding wasn't so intense, we were weaning and I was happy just to still be feeding.
Now I am in the mode of dreading the next feed.
