DD is 1 and always loves her breast feeds. Since we have been away she dramatically dropped her feeds , now my right breast is really blocked up and she will only feed off it for about 30 seconds then starts getting agitated . She has only had one proper feed all day . Is she self weaning ? I'm not sure what I should be doing right now ?

I had a blocked duct which no amount of massage cleared, can you try dangle feed, put your dd on a mattress/or on blanket on the floor, kneel on all fours over her & let her feed.
It worked brilliantly for me. There may be more help on kellymom website

Lonelybunny · 12/08/2013 21:44

Tried dangle feeding she got some milk then turned away , don't think she liked it ,

I had a blocked duct that dh cleared with his fist while dd fed on that side. in a tent in the middle of nowhere in Germany in the middle of the night.

it was a joyous time Grin . needed serious force to unblock. I toyed with passing out from the pain.

Lonelybunny · 12/08/2013 22:06

Thing is I tried that last week and i got really bad bruising to
My breast :-/ so I a bit dubious now , I will go
To GP and ask I think

Off the wall suggestions... I have hear of people's dps clearing blocked ducts for them (suction), or even one flexible lady who did it herself!

When oh say grape-sized, do you mean ou have a protruding lump, or is this a hard area inside the breast? Can you describe it more?

UnevenTan · 12/08/2013 22:14

If she won't drink it, then you really do need to get the milk out. A pump could be a good idea.

Lonelybunny · 12/08/2013 22:28

I've got one that can be felt right under the skin then a bigger one deeper on the other side

An opinion from the GP would be a good idea. Could it be a galactocele?

Does the skin look normal over the lump?

Trying2bMindful · 12/08/2013 22:38

ooh, you poor thing.

Should you give up bf? Only if you and your LO want too... but it sounds like she is frustrated by the blockage hindering milk flow, rather than a lack of interest.

Sounds like you need some massage, lots of feeding in the bath (will she? My 14 mo DS loves feeding in a hot bath) and if that does not clear it you might need antibiotics. Those might not unblock the blockage though so you need professional advice (& most drs have only a few hours of bf training so i would not trust them, unless they have a specific interest in bf)

have you called one of the helplines? they can give you the best advice.... www.thebabycafe.org/breastfeeding-help/2-helpline-numbers.html

Yes skin is ok , it was bruised last week from prodding tooth but that's disappeared , I'm worried its something worse :( I will see GP

aufaniae · 12/08/2013 23:48

Do see GP if you're worried it might be something worse, definitely best to get checked out. However do remember GPs are not BFing experts. I would also speak to someone who's a BFing expert, from Trying's list, they will almost cetainly give much better advice about BFing issues than your average GP IME.

Lonelybunny · 13/08/2013 10:48

Just got back from GP she doesn't think it's a blocked duct she thinks it may be a cyst and is referring me to breast clinic :( I'm so scared

OP posts:
UnevenTan · 13/08/2013 11:40

The chances are it's not something serious, but I can understand your concern. Will you be seen quickly? There is a type of cyst that fills with milk. Sometimes they just need draining. Is it an ultrasound scan you've been referred to?

I agree with the pp that it would be good to ring one of the bf helplines. They will be able to support you through this. Let us know how it goes Smile

Lonelybunny · 13/08/2013 11:43

2 week refferal but I'm on holiday next week :( she said they will likely perform an ultrasound on it yes . Trying to keep calm at the moment

Please do ring one of the BFing helplines, they can provide good advice and support.

aufaniae · 13/08/2013 12:57

What appalling timing, but please try not to worry too much, it's most likely a totally treatable if annoying inconvenience.

Lonelybunny · 13/08/2013 16:19

I do hope so and yes rotten timing :(

Drladybird · 13/08/2013 20:19

I would also encourage you to speak to a bf expert. My GP also referred me for lumps and pain during bf (when my child was 16 months) but wasn't much help in the first instance. Once referred, I was surprised at the doctor's complete lack of knowledge about bf despite being a breast specialist. A bf specialist can provide information and support that general practitioners may not be able to.

Good luck. I hope everything works out.
