Have to stop bf at 1 :( Cows milk or formula???

Hi all. Well my lovely dd is 1 now. We both love bf...in fact I how no idea how I will get her off it but dd is an ivf baby and realistically if there is to be any chance of a sibling it has to be ivf and soon re my age Hmm I so wish I would just magically get pregnant but my periods haven't even come back yet given we usually end up cosleeping and dd has a few nocturnal nibbles. I figure night weaning is our first stage and I need to swop over one of our feeds. Is formula 'better' than cows milk? So sad...I wish she could stop when she's good and ready but I also think she'd like a sibling one day too... and there are some frozen chaps in a freezer waiting for a go too. Any advice much appreciated. Hmm

Go straight to cows milk. She won't need formula as long as she's getting a balanced diet.
huge congrats on making it to 1, and hope DC2 is en route soon.

Hi

I I will admit i am biased towards cows milk as I have read the politics of bf which doesn't leave the formula companies in a very good light... however that aside...

When my ds was 1 he still drank loads of milk (bm on demand) so lots of cows milk on demand as a replacement would not have been great so formula may have been the answer. I still would have used cows milk though.

If you are only thinking about one feed though - cows milk is easy and accessible. You don't have to worry about the prep of formula etc. My DS went to nursery at 13months (still bf fed on demand) and had cows milk after lunch. so went from multiple b/f feeds a day to 2 during the week.

Then as you want to ween more off b/f replace some with formula / some with cows milk?? but by then your dd may be old enough you aren't so worried and just go with cows milk. I know at 12months I was stressed about nursery and drinking milk etc.

I wont advise you on night weaning as i was rubbish at that and just lucky that nursery wore him out enough to sleep a bit longer. i think they say that 12-6am is the best window to get back ovulation. I think I read that on LLL.

Stopped bf both my DDs at around 13/14 months went straight to cows milk...I was a little anxious but tried not to stress about it..you'll be fine good luck with the IVF.

Thanks all. She is still having a lot of milk so I think it's going to have to be formula. We've tried some of the ready made stuff today in a cup but she didn't like the taste much and shivered after every go. Think we need to go for bottle and a teat. Seems like a backwards step but can't see that she'd drink enough of it otherwise. Can't see this is going to be easy at all!!! X

there's no reason to use formula at all. at a year old cow's milk is absolutely fine

thisisyesterday · 10/08/2013 18:10

it might be worth cutting down gradually mind you, while she gets used to it

SquidgersMummy · 10/08/2013 18:26

But if she is having a lot is cows milk ok? Today she had a feed on waking, one before her am nap, a quick one when upset at the park, one before pm nap, one on waking and she'll have one to go to bed and no doubt some overnight. Bugger....sleep and booby are rather linked aren't they. Is there a limit to how much cows milk is ok?? I seem to think there is but is that rubbish? I'd prefer cows milk. So shocked to see emulsifiers in all the formulas...urggh.

Why do u have to stop? Ready to go back to work? Can't u express and give it in a sippy cup?

ouryve · 10/08/2013 18:28

Is she eating a good range of foods?

SpottyTeacakes · 10/08/2013 18:30

I don't see any reason to use formula? Also you might find that although she has lots of breast feeds she might be happy with milk from a cup less often and maybe once you cut a couple of breast feeds she might naturally feed less from you too.

Good luck Smile

ouryve · 10/08/2013 18:30

Read the OP, thistlelicker - SquidgersMummy wants to try for a sibling as soon as possible so needs to get her hormones back to normal.

SquidgersMummy · 10/08/2013 18:31

I have to get back to ivf re my age. Got 2 frozen embryos that I'm hopeful about. She is blw and a good eater but the range is limited I'd say; every meal is either pasta, noodles or mash plus fruit or veg. Ok with mince but otherwise limited meat. Good with yoghurt but not keen on cheese. X

Cows' milk is fine. No need for formula after age 1, as I assume you're also feeding her solid food. THe only reason cows' milk is not ideal is because it is low in iron - she should be getting that elsewhere (your breastmilk will now be lower in iron as well)

tumbletumble · 10/08/2013 18:33

She's having lots of feeds, but may not actually be taking as much milk as you think - I expect it's mainly a comfort thing (assuming she's eating plenty of solids). You may be surprised at the small amount of cows milk she drinks.

I stopped bfing DS1 at 12 months and went straight to cows milk from a cup. Like you I felt that introducing a bottle was a bit of a backwards step at that age. I'd give cups a go if I were you!

SquidgersMummy · 10/08/2013 22:18

Thanks all. Cows milk it is then. Much easier and seems a much nicer option. I think she is comfort feeding. I have read on here to always sit in the same place to feed...and then to never sit there! So I'll try a few things. The formula does taste a bit odd - strange after taste to it. Will just keep an eye on her iron intake. Thanks all....I think I might be back for more advice XX
