hi all

Looking for opinions on what to do next.

My 3 week old bf baby has oral thrush. The doc prescribed nystatin which I think really disagreed with her-the day after starting it she was screaming in pain & poo seemed a struggle, (even runnier than usual). So I stopped giving it to her -this was yest teatime so by that stage she had 4x.1ml doses within 24 hours.

She has now a bit of nappy thrush-hv came today & she'd been fine until then but was v unsettled when she was here-lot of v loud non stop crying. I filled her in on above & she said she would get cream for nappy thrush sent to chemist & speak to doc about alternative oral thrush treatment. She then rang & said another hv at clinic said maybe baby was upset by nappy thrush & I should continue with nystatin as this will help.

I am really reluctant to give it as my instincts say it's really disagreeing with her but not sure what to do. I've got myself some acidophilus & have ordered some infant probiotics.

The nystatin seems to have reduced the amount of thrush in her mouth already & I'm picking up bum cream tomorrow.
Should I give a really low dose of nystatin or wait & rely on probiotics etc-anyone any experience of these? The oral thrush didn't seem to bother her that much & not sure if nappy thrush should be more bothersome to babies.

I have daktarin cream for nipples-putting it on at night but they seem ok so far.

Sorry this is so epic but any advice/opinions appreciated!

TIA

IMHO you both need proper drugs to beat thrush.
Fluconazole and prescribed correctly.

Check on the bfn website (on phone so not great at linking sorry). Thrush is a bitch to get rid of properly and if you get nipple thrush properly bf will be torture.
Sorry!

If you google bfn and thrush it gets you to a page with a link to an info page about thrush - the info has changed recently I notice. Making it even less likely that a gp will prescribe it I think!

nystatin should not upset her that much.... it could be so many things upsettingher! however thrush in their mouth is meant to be v sore.
are your nipples being treated? niether of you should be treated in isolation....
the guidance has changed but that is because thrush is often diagnosed when it doesnt really exist. however it sounds like you really do have it so you should push for treatment. If LO has it though I am surprised you dont.
My LO had thrush when i had it and his bum cleared up so quickly it was amazing - the anti fungal cream is really quick. i keep a tube in his nappy bag just in case now!
my nipples took a bit longer to clear up though.
we never saw it in his mouth but were told to treat him for as long as i had it.
I also bought powdered probiotics for babies from the local health store and put in on my nipples before every feed. I also took probiotic capsules for about 2 months.
We only had the one bout at 2 weeks old and have not had it again since - still bf at 14mo!
good luck. sounds like you have a helpful MW so keep hold of her!!

Thanks-doc went from bfn for prescribing nystatin. Do you think fluconazole is better? A quick search seems to state it is for serious cases so he may be reluctant.

It's actually clotrimazole 1% I have for nipple treatment/prevention-only applying at night at minute & washing & air drying nipples after feeding in day

There are quite a variety of home remedies-I'm wondering if any are particularly worth trying....

Thanks for the info
