domperidome for low supply

Has anyone had success with domperidome. My LO is 13 days old and after an up again down again weightless with formula topups my MW tested my prolactin and my levels are very low. Today they prescribed me 3 x 10mg domperidome.

I've tried everything. Massage, constant skin to skin, feed on demand., I hand express after feeds (5mls tops) and pumping gets me nothing. We have a good latch but after a 11% weightloss on day 5 we were on 15ml topups every three hours with two 50ml topups at night. Tiny weight increases or losses but still my milk barely keeps her sucking and all topups are through a supplementing feeding boob tube.

Anyone try domperidome? How long did it take to kick in and did you get to exclusively breastfeed?

It worked for me, though I had to argue with the GP to get it. I think it started to make a difference within 24 hours - I could feel a let down reflex again.

I took 10-20mg three times a day from when DS2 was around 9 weeks or so. I only recently stopped feeding him at 18 months, but past 6 months I rarely took the domperidone.

It worked within 2 days. Took 10mg x4 a day. Amazed you had your prolactin levels checked - how do they do this? I've had no support from gp,midwives or hv!

My milk still hadn't come in by day 8 so started domperidone at about day 10. Baby was hospitalised for weight loss.

Weeks 2-12 did ff top ups (about 3/4oz, starting every feed and then down to one feed)

Weeks 12-16 exclusively breast fed but slow weight gain (1oz a week). Horrendous pressure from hv and family to give up bf.

Weeks 16-20 x2 5oz ff top ups a day. Weight gain increases to 6oz a week

Week 20 onwards, stop domperidone as dr refused to prescribe, baby feeding loads and dropping or refusing ff. weight gain still 6oz a week.

It did kick my supply off but I have been amazed I can manage without it. Hopefully my breastfeeding challenges (slow weight gain) are behind me now! Good luck! :)

I took domperidone.
I was prescribed 1 tablet 3 Times a day when LO was a 2 weeks old....
Made no difference.
BUT
Have you come across Dr Jack Newman?
See here ((www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml#sthash.cAeJZEEP.dpbs))
He is a god in the bf world!!
Anyway. I followed his advice for domperidone..... I shared his paper with my GP & requested a prescription for 9 tablets a day.
I also pumped after every breastfeed (to stimulate supply), ate lactation cookies and other galactogues (I took 8 capsules of fenugreek a day and blesses thistle! Or mothers milk capsules available on amazon) and fed LO on demand throughout the day and night (v important for prolactin levels to feed during the night).
We did lots of skin to skin (lovely baths, a baby moon, carried him in a wrap sling at home and did some co sleeping/napping) to stimulate supply.
We also had hands on support from the nCT bf cafe, my local LLL group and a private LC.
My LO looked like a famine victim at 4wo but by 8wo he had started to fill out and I stopped pumping every day (phew!).
I only fully phased out the domperidone at 6mo. I followed Dr jack new mans advice for reducing it but was so worried about a dip in supply that I spread it over 4 months rather than 9 weeks. In hindsight I could have done it quicker though!
We are still bf at 14mo and I am so pleased a lC introduced me to Dr Jack Newman and domperidone.
Good luck. If you have any other questions please do come back. I know how hard it is. Bf has been the toughest thing I have ever tried to crack!!

Oh and I got a private lC to come to the house to snip DSs PTT that everyone had missed or told me wasn't bad enough to warrant a snip.... It might be coincidence but his weight started to increase after that snip.
(He also saw an osteopath to reduce tension in his jaw that prevented him from opening his mouth).

Also worth calling one of the bf helplines for some counsel - free impartial advice that is not weighed down by NHS protocols... (Some babies grow slower than others)

Tryingtobemindful has some excellent bits of advice there, I'm a midwife and she's spot on!

Totally agree on the posterior tongue tie, get it checked so so many are missed and for some babies it makes a real difference.

I'd see a lactation consultant for sure.

My domperidone took 24 hours to work. I didn't start taking it until baby was 4 months old though when my huge supply totally knocked off after my dad suddenly died. I was relieved when I felt full again!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/08/2013 17:56

How is your LOs latch? Jack Newman is v good on this issue, but he recommends fixing any latch issue, doing skin-to-skin, and doing breast compressions, all alongside domperidone.

Trying2bMindful · 09/08/2013 19:07

How you doing OP? I hope iT all works out.
Fwiw we had to top up with formula from week 1 to week 6. I was so upset but it is what was needed. (As I did not know about donor milk and could never pump enough).
Looking forward to hearing from you. If you have any more questions do ask.

MimsyBorogroves · 09/08/2013 21:26

Hope you're doing okay OP.

Fenugreek also worked slightly on my supply but unfortunately it really upsets my stomach. May be worth a try though.

Domperidone is also available to buy over the counter (as motilium) - this was going to be my next step if I didn't get the prescription granted as it still worked out cheaper than buying formula.
