Biting and BLW

I have been doing Baby Led Weaning with DS (7 months) for about a month now. His first teeth came through about three weeks ago. Last night he bit me four times when feeding. I put it down to him being uncomfortable and generally grouchy (although it was upsetting for me at the time) but my Ma and DH have asked whether it is anything to do with the fact that DS is having finger foods rather than mush and is therefore used to biting. My gut instinct is that it's just a phase he's going through - which we WILL conqueror - and that most bf babies go on to finger foods eventually so it's unlikely - what do others think?

My DS bit me a few times but the phase passed and i fed him til he was over a year so well onto solid foods.
Never heard of BLW thing with just finger food though so don#t know if it's anything to do with that.

Hi pigeonpie. I'm doing BLW with my ds who is nearly 8 months. I don't think there's any connection tbh. DS has only bitten me once whilst feeding and it was when he was mucking about popping on and off and giggling like it was a game!

At what point in the feeding is he biting you?

PS don't let them put you off BLW!

NotQuiteCockney · 12/06/2006 13:07

I did BLW with DS2, had a bit of a biting thing with him, but I think he was quite a bit older. It wasn't at the same time as food, and no, I don't think the two are related, you're just unlucky.

Talk more about when and how he's biting, maybe people will have some suggestions?

When he bites what do you do?
Is it mid feed or the end when he has had enough?

To make him let go so it hurts less, squash him tighter against you so you cover his nose with your breast and he can't breath then he will let go.

Last night (the bedtime feed) DS bit me when he was latching on, the first time I yelled rather as it was a bit of a surprise (shouldn't have been, but was!), and put him down in his cot. The next times I brought his nose onto my breast so he unlatched said 'no' firmly and either put him down in his cot or just left him on my lap with no eye contact. I think he was just messing cos it was hot, we'd had a busy day and he was tired, but not tired enough just to snuggle and feed.

Thanks Mawbroon for the link.

I'm not going to let DH and Ma put me off - it's me who's doing the bulk of the blw so I don't see why they should, I just wanted amunition to say that I didn't think there was a connection. Thanks very much for all your help.

I would doubt VERY much that it is due to BLW (I am also doing it Smile
it's just a phase, every child goes through it.

CorrieDale · 12/06/2006 20:22

I really can't believe its down to BLW. DS has been BLWed and he's only bitten me a couple of times - both times when he had a tooth coming through. My friend, who weaned the conventional way, suffers at practically every feed with her little nibbler.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2006 20:24

The biting has bog all to do with BLW. Both DSs had a nibble on a nipple and they were force fed carrot puree.

lol soupdragon

Thanks all - glad I can trust my instincts :)
