anyone had to use Dermovate ointment when breastfeeding?

Dermovate is a steroid cream for severe eczema. I barely have eczema most of the time but something made it go mental yesterday and the soles of my feet are covered in red spots under the skin. They are mega itchy and my feet are sore to walk on - feels like I've been trampling in nettles. It's also coming out on my hands like tiny nettle stings but not as bad as feet.

doctor gave me dermovate and permitabs (some fantastic tabs you dissolve in water, stick your feet in, and they turn purple apparently. Bloody brilliant, am returning to work on monday from mat leave so purple feckin feet is just what I wanted). Anyway my ten month old is ebf and was on 3 feeds a day. Today I was planning to drop one feed anyway so that when I'm back at work I'd just do morning and bedtime feeds. The dermovate stuff says 'there is insufficient evidence to say bfing is safe' which puts me off but if phrased the other way round ie insufficient evidence to say unsafe which is equally valid, it doesnt sound so bad! The doc just said it would prob be best not to but wasnt enormously bothered tbh, whereas id really like to keep going a bit longer.
I need to pump and dump to keep supply going as we're going to Thailand in 2 weeks and I want to bf there so I dont have to bugger about with formula. Ive got a bit frozen but not much so was wondering if I fed her in the evening, then put cream on, then fed her with frozen milk or formula in the morning, it would be 24hrs after applying the cream that I would feed her again in the evening. Any thoughts or advice on this fellow wiser mners? Sorry for marathon post!

Don't know myself (have used other steroid creams whilst breastfeeding including on nipples), but these people are the people to ask:

sorry here is that link

Use I did. I have eczema and used lots of different steroid cream,s for ,y skin whilst breeding and pregnant.

They are topical and it will not get into through your skin and into your blood supply, so won't affect your milk!

Lots of stuff about this and resources online. The link posted by tarka is good :)

Ffs bloody auto correct.

That should be yes I did and whilst bfeeding not breeding!

If there isn't specific info about Dermovate on the BfN drug factsheets via the website you ask their pharmacist, Wendy Jones, directly via her FB page Breastfeeding and Medication.

Like 5Madthings said it'll probably be fine because it won't enter your bloodsteam so won't enter your milk.

Wow that was fast! Thank you Tarka, 5mad and Life, will get onto the links and fb pages now. Any ideas what on earth triggers these things - I've never had anything like this before, am wondering if my feet got too hot and dry (have dry callouses from running)??

Think my immune system has short circuited....

thanks again for advice :-D

I saw a consultant and they said topically applied creams/ointments are fine for feeding, even on nipples. I had eczema on my nipples and aerola whilst feeding...nice. But I would put the cream on them after a feed and wipe them before a feed, tho that was not strictly necessary.

My eczema always got worse when preg and wasn't great when bfeeding, this is commonish apparently one in three women find it gets worse, think its hormone related.

Could just be the heat and I find my feet get itchy after running. What socks do you wear? Are they little red spots/blisters? I get this on the palms of my hands, its a specific kind if eczema that I forget the name of...

Advice back from BfN fb page was that it is fine unless I'm using more than a tube a week!! Which I'm not planning on doing... thanks again for your help, am much happier now :-)

Sorry x post and duplicate. It hasnt been worse either during pregnancy or bfing - until Thursday! We were coming home from 2 weeks in lanzarote, my uneducated guess is my feet got too hot and dry (the skin was getting v dry), I was in flip flops and sandals the whole time. The cream has stopped the itching and pain, but the angry red blotches are still there - feet look hideous! I have a number of tiny red dots on my fingersbut they seem to be going down. Hopefully it's all calming down...
