Can you transport warm formula?

Sorry, I have googled but not having much luck. DD is BF but had hoped to give her a bottle tomorrow as we're out for the day travelling by public transport for a lonh journey and finding a place to stop and feed may be tricky. She happily takes a bottle of formula but only when warm. Tried her with a carton of formula at room temp today but she refused it. Would it be safe to make up formula with slightly cooled boiled water as advised then transport it while it cools to feed 1-2 hours later?

you could take hot water in a flask or in a bottle in an insulated bag and add the powder as required or take cold milk in a cool bag and then warm it when required. I wouldn't take warm milk as that is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

The water you add the powder to, needs to be very hot when you add it, or it won't kill the bugs in the powder.

Most cafes etc will provide a bowl of hot water to heat the formula in, if that helps.

Oh, and yes, feeding on public transit can be fine. In a sling, it can be quite discreet.

Thanks. Am totally unprepared so no thermos or sling (we're already on first leg of long journey). Basically we have v early start then driving to train station and got to park and catch train. DD likely to get hungry just as we arrive at station or before so I had thought bottle would be simpler as can feed her while we walk from car to station. She takes bottle quickly but BF can take ages.. Otherwise will need to leave half hour earlier and feed her in car/at station but toddler likely to have a meltdown while waiting!

I'd just pick up a carton of ready made from the supermarket. Loads easier.

RobotHamster · 02/08/2013 18:51

But no - don't transport warm formula. It'll be fine for a short while, but not good to keep it warm for ages, the bacteria will love it :)

abigboydidit · 02/08/2013 19:15

Thanks I had the carton stuff but she won't take it unless warmed. How's about if I boiled the kettle just before I left, put it in the bottle and put the bottle in the insulated bottle holder part of my changing bag and then add the powder to that when I get there (about an hour later). Can always run under cold tap to cool if required.

Actually that's stupid of me. I could run the bottle of carton milk under the hot tap. Doh!

I've fed my daughter while walking around Ikea carrying her. It can be done! Just get a vest underneath to cover your tummy. Either that or make up formula boiling hot and it will cool down by the time you need to use it.

RobotHamster · 02/08/2013 19:45

Yy, you can warm the cartons - they're sterile. We used to put them on the radiator.

Or the hot water in the bottle sounds like a plan too - in an insulated pocket the temp probably won't drop that much anyway

RobotHamster · 02/08/2013 19:49

Just don't make up the formula hot and then put in the insulated pocket. Too long at too warm = bacteria

McBaby · 02/08/2013 21:33

My LO would have been distracted enough by the station and all the people enough to then feed on the train. Wold distraction for ten minutes work?

Playdoughcaterpillar · 02/08/2013 21:42

I always used to put the boiling water in bottle at home, powder measured out separately in a pot and then by the time I needed it, the water had cooled to right temperature and I just mixed in the powder. Very easy to do out and about. But don't mix it up till you need it. Can wrap the bottle in the right amount of spare clothes/muslins, depending on how long you want it stay warm for!
Safe journey!

BF all the way, formula when travelling is nothing short of a pain in the backside.

Beckmum4 · 04/08/2013 20:57

When My daughter had 6 oz I'd make a 5oz bottle of boiled cool water and take 6 scoops of milk and a flask of boiling water. When she needed a bottle all I had to do is top the bottle of cooled boiled water up with 1oz boiling hot Water to make up to 6oz bottle then add powder and shake it would make a perfect temp bottle for her :)
