Happy stories about feeding in public

Inspired by another MNer asking for support for public feeding, I thought it might be nice to share experiences of people being surprisingly lovely and helpful when BFing, because it's intimidating to start off.

I have loads!
I was in a restaurant, quite early on, and obviously DD wanted a feed the moment the food arrived. The waiter spotted us, took my plate and popped it under the heater to keep warm. Then without my having to ask, noticed when we'd finished and brought it back.

On a flight, I thought the best way to keep her happy would be feeding. The steward brought me water because I would be thirsty, then when doing the usual drinks/snacks run, gave me an extra biscuit, saying it was for DD, but I'd have to eat it first Grin

Another flight, at the end a woman said to me 'that's such a good idea, feeding her during takeoff and landing, it'll stop her wee ears hurting'

There are loads more, little positive comments, encouraging smiles etc, waiters/waitresses serving me at a table rather than me going to the counter, and I've never had a single negative comment. Yay the public!

What about yours?

I was feeding DD1 in the middle of sainsburys cafe when an old lady walked past us, put her hand on my shoulder very briefly, & said, "Lovely to see, dear. Keep it up." then she disappeared.

I was sitting in the downstairs lobby of the National Theatre (top tip: great free space on the Southbank for feeding - quiet but not too quiet and made me feel cultured!) feeding dd1 under a scarf. I noticed (Smile) three good looking men who obviously were working on one of the productions walk past. Five mins later they walked back and one stopped and said that it was really lovely to see me feeding my baby and it made a beautiful scene. I blushed not out of embarrassment but because the really handsome man had spoken to me!

Lots of times had (generally older women) say that it was lovely to see

For me there were no grand gestures or extra biscuits you lucky thing but I really loved the "in the know" smiles from other mothers who spotted what we were doing. I find myself doing it now Smile The smile just pops out unconsciously Smile

A waiter at a restaurant cut up my food for me after he realised that I was BF DS in a sling. He gave me extra cheese as well.

Those are great - I think free biscuits for feeding mums would definitely increase rates of BFing!

We were in a car showroom buying a new car last week. The receptionist gave me a knowing smile, walked away and came back with a glass of water!!

worldgonecrazy · 02/08/2013 15:27

When I was bfing I had lots of glasses of water brought to me, offers of cushions, etc.

I never had a single negative comment and I breastfed to 15 months.

I did have a friend who asked if she could take a photo of me feeding my daughter as it was one of the most beautiful things she had seen - that made me cry.

Worldgone crazy: your friend sounds great - its true that it's such a lovely thing, I already miss the long snuggly newborn feeds Smile

I breastfed DD2, who was then over one, at a wedding. A childless friend said to me "oh, MI, are you still breastfeeding" (cue me starting to suck teeth) " how wonderful!" She beamed from ear to ear, and so did I.

Wiggy29 · 02/08/2013 22:16

Only ever had positive responses, generally people saying how beautiful/ lovely it is or even things like 'Well done!' or 'Super!' Maybe that's because I was always happy and clearly enjoyed doing it so maybe my pleasure was contagious. Also had lots of women coming up saying how lovely it is and how they miss it now their children are older which I totally understand.

I was waiting for prescription in doctors when my DD was a week old. She was crying so I sat down to feed her. i was struggling with a muslin to try and cover up, when a lovely old lady came over and draped the muslin over for me Grin.

VinegarDrinker · 07/08/2013 20:06

I had a lovely older lady come over to me when I was feeding DS1(who was about 6weeks) in a branch of Pret and tell me how great it was that I was able to BF in public, and that she had had to feed in the toilet when hers were little Sad

rubyslippers · 07/08/2013 20:09

i never had a negative reaction

i fed DD until she was 3 years old although she didn't feed much in public past around 2.5 years

the nicest one was when we went out for a meal with DD around valentines day - a couple held her and burped her after i had fed so i didn't have to eat one handed. Was with my older child as well

that was lovely :-)
