Could be all manner of things! The Kellymom website has a good page on fussy feeding that might shed light...

Not saying this is it, but I do know a fast flow can be too much and cause the effect you've described.

Sometimes one side is always heavier with milk and a faster let-down. With a fast flow they can choke and splutter, or gulp down a huge amount of air (which will be painful later).

If that is what you're experiencing you can express a little off before the feed, so the worst of the force has subsided. Or lie down a little so gravity can help.

I second the kellymom website as they have lots of good ideas.

thanks, it tends to be towards the end of the feed normally and I had been expressing just before he woke up for s feed this afternoon and he still did his little jig ! will have a look ok kellymom and see if there are any answers.

If fast flow, which for me kicked in about 6 weeks and made DS2 pull away, wail etc and refuse to entertain one side, I found (after seeing lactation consultant) trying a few different tricks. Sometimes one or the other worked, enough to stop me giving up completely after shouting 'i hate bf!' on several occasions:

  1. try the rugby hold - I had to try this several times before getting comfortable & for me it only worked on a deep sofa & when DS2 was quite small, but it did help!

  2. variation of rugby hold but more sitting up/sideways so DS2 thought he was on the ok side

  3. standing up, jiggling about a bit, seemed to calm DS2 and enabled feeding when he was distraught; probably not one for when you are in a cafe, but did help sometimes, luckily he could cope with glow from about 5 months so I am not doing standing feeding still at nearly 7 months!

Hope something works. Also see bf clinic/cafe if you can, sometimes reflux kicks in at 6 weeks. It did for my two, had been fine up til then, baby gaviscon really helped, and the reflux went by about 5/6 months.

Mine does this when she needs a burp or had enough. Xxx

my daughter did this but was accompanied with horrid poo and sick. Health Visitor advised reducing dairy in my diet. I did and eventually had completely dairy free. It turned out my daughter has a dairy intolerance but it took 6 months of pushing to get her diagnosed and put onto to prescription formula milk. We had an awful first 6 months because health professionals are quick to keep you breastfeeding as long as they can even though my daughter was in such a state from it. Speak to your health visitor for help and keep pushing if their suggestions dont help. They tried to fob me off with allsorts saying her gut & bowel was trying to adjust to being on the outside and not in the womb. It gets you down if you dont keep asking for help. I stopped bf for 2 weeks over xmas and then had to re-establish my milk after it had dried up because they were adamant I was wrong. Good Luck :)

sorry for not replying sooner, it does seem to be wind. fingers crossed that has resolved it, now just to wind him efficiently every time !
