Is my milk running out?

I had my DD 6 days ago & so far have been breastfeeding her, I'm really enjoying it so far but I'm a bit concerned that my milk is drying up already. Usually she feeds around 8 times in 24 hours, has one boob for a good 20 mins comes off, seems content for 5 mins then roots around for more which is when I either pop her back on same boob repeat & then try other boob or swap to other one when she first roots, however I'm getting worried that my milk supply is dwindling, milk came in on Saturday (day 3) breasts were very engorged & like rocks, had to hand express a little off to get her to latch but by Sunday evening engorgment had disappeared & everything was going smoothly but yesterday evening my right boob felt very deflated, woke up this morning to very deflated boobs so much so I can fit into my pre-pregnancy bras & my nursing bras that fit two days ago are huge. DD is still feeding but has become fussier today & have had to alternate boobs 4, sometimes 5 times when feeding as she comes off & roots after a few minutes or just let's the nipple slip out of her mouth before rooting again.
I'm really enjoying breastfeeding so far & really don't want this to be the end! Confused

I'm not an expert, and please seek rl help, but I seriously doubt that your milk is drying up. As far as I understand it, bf works on a supply and demand basis. The frequent feeding acts to stimulate your supply and increase it. So I would say keep feeding as you are doing and in a few days your supply will have caught up and it should settle down.

I would suggest that you speak to a bf advisor e.g.

National Breastfeeding Helpline: tel:0300 100 0212

La Leche League helpline: tel:0845 120 2918

As brighton says it's really unlikely your milk is drying up. Not everyone has larger breasts while feeding. Newborns feed frequently to build you supply as the more they take the more you make.

The best way to tell if your baby is getting enough milk is to check there are enough wet and dirty nappies and weight loss/gain is normal.

Kellymom is a great site for breastfeeding info and the page for newborns is here kellymom.com/bf/normal/newborn-nursing/

It wouldn't hurt to call a helpline too, they are experts and can talk things through and pick up any problems.

Congratulations and good luck Thanks
