Breastfeeding when pregnant...

suzi2 · 09/06/2006 22:50

I'm only a little bit pregnant (just got my BFP) and I'm still breastfeeding DS who is 10 months. All being well, what can expect breastfeeding when pregnant? I've read about sore nipples and dwindling supply - when do they kick in? Should I be doing supply boosting tactics now? Also, will DS be getting all my horrid pregnancy hormones - will he get morning sickness for example Smile?

Any info and success stories appreciated. I would hope that I can continue to feed him throughout and perhpas tandem feed.

Hi Suzi2

Congrats Grin. I bf dd now 22 months during this pg(due in July).Had planned like you to continue throughout the pg and also tandemfeed both.I went through the tender nipple stage which was hard but didn't last too long thankfully.I was still feeding dd through the night and we co-sleep but had to knock it on the head when i was about 6 months pg as i was too knackered to do the night feeding.She was unhappy about it but again it didn't last long.I gradually cut down the daytime feeds too as the more pg i got the less i felt i wanted to tandemfeed.Eventually(about a month ago)she just stopped and it is good to have a rest before the baby starts feeding non stop lol.I think when she gave up of her own accord the milk had gone and she was seeking the comfort,shes just as cuddly and still loves being snuggled in,only difference is she's not getting booby which she says is for babies.Good luck with everything and hope it goes smoothly for you.

I've breastfeed in all my pregnancies (except for the first, of course). I found that in three of them, the supply dwindled at around the 3 month mark. I don't know if this was due to lack of demand, lack of production or a combination of both. Fourth time, I breastfed all the way through and well beyond.

I had fairly classic ms in the first pregnancy, but less with each subsequent one.

I don't think the toddler suffers from pregnancy hormones.

I'm by no means no expert, but I think if you keep on feeding, then your supply will build itself back up again. I know a few woman who breastfed through pregnancy and then went on to tandem feed for quite a while after. My own personal experience of it is that I managed to bf for 3 months of this pregnancy, but it was agonising, (I'm now 6 months pg, and still feel like my nipples could drop off at any time!!!)

Kellymom will have some good info. \link{http://kellymom.com/bf/tandem/index.html\Here's their section on breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem feeding}

Hope this helps!

hello and congratulations!
I bf all the way through my pregnancy and am now tandem feeding my two daughters (7 months and 3yo).
I found my supply dwindled for a little while in the first trimester but dd1 just persisted Grin and then all was fine.
I had no problem with sore nipples (that I can recall). Tandem feeding is fabulous, and (obviously) establishing feeding/supply secod time round is loads easier when you havent actually stopped Grin.
best of luck
HC xx

I fell pregnant with ds2 when ds1 was 13 months old. I breastfed ds1 throughout my pregnancy and then breastfed both until ds1 was 3. Still feeding ds2 (who is now 2.5 years). It was difficult and tiring and positioning of ds1 was difficult in the latter stage of pregnancy - no lap!

I found a useful book \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0912500972/qid%3D1149922869/202-2803096-2441425\Adventures in Tandem Nursing}

HTH and good luck!

Suzi2 - are you still feeding? how is it going?

I'm 6 weeks pg and it's getting painful and I'm sooo tired... can't decide if it's worth continuing as DS 17mths doesn't seem that fussed about feeding right now

suzi2 · 21/07/2006 10:30

Hi KQ - now about 10 wks and still feeding him. The soreness and tiredness passed for me about 7 wks. Although I feel awfully sick when feeding him.

Not sure if we'll be continuing as he's started biting and I'm not sure I can cope with bleeding nipples!

I'm on the verge of giving up. I've only been feeding him on waking and bedtime but he doesn't want to feed from me at bedtime. One feed a day doesn't seem sustainable really

Laura032004 · 27/07/2006 22:01

KeepingQuiet - I did one feed a day for about four months with no problems. I stopped feeding DS1 at 22m when I was 22w pg with DS2. I only stopped as it was continuing to be uncomfortable for me. I did notice that I needed to watch my fluid and food intake more than before - if I didn't eat or drink enough, I did feel like my milk supply suffered for it.

Good luck with the pg and bf
