2 week old, distressed while feeding

Hi ladies,

My DD is 2 weeks old and I have breast fed her and given formula top up pretty much since birth. At the start she was latching no problem and was feeding normally and calmly. Over the past week she has become more and more distressed while feeding. By this I mean that she has problems latching on and just sucks the end of my nipple or mouths the area unable to find it even though its in her mouth. All this is happening while she is crying and screaming and generally getting angry for no apparent reason.
Once she has eventually latched on she will feed for maybe 20-30 seconds before starting to grizzle and coming off the breast crying loudly. The only way to get her back on the breast is to wind her and bounce her to calm her then try again. This cycle repeats indefinitely until she has had a couple of longer feeds without crying or until I give in and give her a bottle because she is so distressed.
If it wasn't for this problem I feel we would be purely breast feeding by now but I keep having to top up because she is so distressed. Any ideas how to help her?

Thank you

No sorry but I hope someone comes on soon who can help and if not your health visitor should be able to tell you where the local breast feeding support group meets - usually lovely people

Look at the Kellymom website page on fussy at the breast. My 14 wo does this, and has done since about 2 wks. She has a tongue tie that keeps on reattaching, which I think is the main cause. But she also does it when she's growth spurting and generally out of sorts. There is a growth spurt around 2 wks, so it could be that? In which case trying to resist topping up is a good idea as the baby is essentially trying to increase your supply...

Thank you for the tips, Kellymom has some useful info. This behaviour was at its worst this weekend when DD did seem out of sorts generally, I think due to to many people handling her. She is still behaving this way but not for every feed so that's an improvement. The HV is due this week so I'll speak to her about it as well.

Could it be over stimulation/tiredness? A lady at bumps and babes group had a similar problem and it was because her little one was trying to feed when over tired.

Good luck with the health visitor Smile
