making up formula bottles

hi i have a 2 wk old dd2 and i as i had a c-section i have been sterilising bottles and putting them in the fridge empty and using cartons of readymade formula when needed. i just wondered what was best when using the formula powder. with my ds1 i made up the feeds with formula and then stored them in the fridge, i cooled them down first in cold water. but i was thinking is it better to sterilise the bottles and put them in the fridge with cooled boiled water in them. then when baby needs a feed warm the water up in a jug of hot water then add formula powder? or will the powder dissolve in the water if it is cold? any suggestions/help please

I always used to make them up when the water was the required temp, then cool them a bit and store them in the fridge. You can do a day's worth this way. IIRC, you need to make them up when the water is the right twmp - it won't work if you mix it with cold water.

A tip: if you are out and about and can afford the readymx formula, get your dd to get used to drinking it at the ambient temperature and not warm - it makes life so much easier.

I have made sterilised bottles up with cooled boiled water. If lo will take bottles at room temp you only need to add powder when required. Saves time re-heating botles that way.

Also if you're out and about, you can buy little tubs to carry measured powder formula to add to bottles.

i have just rg sma care helpline and they have advised me not to store empty sterilised bottles in the fridge. they say to put cooled boiled water in them and use them within 12 hrs. i said about making up feeds then cooling them then putting them in the fridge. she said they are advising against this but if i did then just to make sure i cool bottles quickly and store in the back of the fridge this way they will last 24 hrs. to be honest this is what i did with ds1 and he was ok i think ill just make up feeds for 24 hrs and store them in the fridge.

With dd1, I used to pour boiled water into bottles and leave out so the water was at room temperature and then put the powder in when time to feed etc. (Obviously, the bottles were sealed when left out!) This saved me having to warm the bottles up.

I used to have to warm the bottles up when I used to store in the fridge. Far less of a pallaver (sp) to get them used to room temperature.

When out and about I used to use cartons - so much easier than carrying water and powder.

hotmama- i have spoke to a friend who does the same as you. makes up bottles with cooled boiled water then leaves them in the kitchen at room temp. then adds powder when needed. i think i will do this. i will have to find place in kitchen to put bottles. my friend says she makes up 24 hrs worth, but for some reason sma say the water must be used within 12 hrs. i think that using this method is safer than making up formula and putting in the fridge.
