Follow-on milk

Hi, DS is nearly 6m. He's been mostly breastfed throughout his life, but I've been swapping some feeds for formula for a few weeks, so it's now roughly half and half. And we've started weaning, but he's not eating much yet. After this tin of formula is finished he'll be old enough for the next stage milk. Is there any advantage to changing to next stage milk? He gets on fine with the infant milk he's on, does that become unsuitable at some point? Wondering what others did.

Thanks!

The advantage is you can get points in boots on follow on milk unlike first stage formula.

It contains more iron but there really is no need to switch but I think it is cheaper.

First stage is still fine though

No problem continuing stage 1 milk.

The 'follow on' milk can be advertised and has higher iron content an stage one, but there is also iron in the food your baby is eating, the first stage formula and the breast milk you are still feeding him (the iron in BM is very easily absorbed.)

There's absolutely no reason why you have to change to follow on milk. Its still got the basic nutrition that your LO needs. Plus you are starting to wean, and you BF too, so I think you've got all the nutrient boxes ticked.

The only real reason is like others have said, follow on can be cheaper, and you can earn loyalty points on in (any store, not just boots).

If your LO is happy with it, just stick with it.

Just went for a quick look. The price at Boots seems to be the same for both. But I'm now wondering why is there fish oil and soy in both of them???

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 25/07/2013 14:27

Cow and gate doesn't have the fish.

The fish oils are the source of the long-chain unsaturated fatty acids which manufacturers claim are an important added ingredient.

Soya - not sure why that's in. Maybe call the manufacturers and ask them?

Twirlyhot · 25/07/2013 14:36

I kind of understand the theory behind the fish oil but it had never occurred to me that baby milk isn't vegetarian!

I was surprised about the soy/soya because they recommend only giving soy formula if proven necessary. It's probably just a trace. It seems to be in everything now!

Soya really is in everything. Cheap fills in most things although proper soya products are nice.
