Dd2 is 4 weeks old and ebf. During the day she feeds beautifully and her weight gain has being amazing. However during the evenings she wants to cluster feed which im fine with but she is really unsettled at the breast and pulls backwards and twists all whilst still attached, obviously this is vile and as a result its making me very sore :-(
I asked my hv and she suggested giving a bottle of formula which is something im not keen on. Has anyone got any experience of this or any ideas of why its happening??

My 8 week old does this and I wondered if maybe he is trying to tease out more milk or get more comfy? He shakes his head sort of back and forth, taking my nipple with him Shock I tend to shift his position a little bit and that seems to quieten him down. I also sort of 'hold' (not force) the front part of the nipple deep into his mouth to prevent it being sore if he is clamping down on the tip and moving his head (ouch!).

I don't know if any of that is the answer but it seems to mostly work for me and he seems to settle a bit better after a moment or two. I considered formula but I just thought I don't want to start messing with my supply or bottles etc, but I'm not an expert Smile

Can sympathise and will watch with interest Smile

It may be entirely coincidental, but my 3 week old DD does this - starts the day feeding really well and seems to get gradually more uncomfortable throughout the day until she is thrashing around by late evening. She is gaining lots of weight but I have sore nipples. I attended a BF support group yesterday where they diagnosed a submucosal/posterior tongue tie and made us an appointment to get it snipped. The discomfort she is in is where she is taking in lots of air while feeding due to the tie.

My LO has done this since birth (now 10 weeks) and it's always a burp issue! Prop them upright and wind them - hopefully a huge belch will emerge and you can continue.

Sometimes it's just tiredness, and I swap boobs to calm her down.

I made the same discovery as Beaver. Try taking her off for a burp and she'll probably revert to comfortable feeding. You might have to do this a few times during a feed as the wind can build up.
