Think 5 week old has oral thrush - what do I do

Noticed 2 days ago that DS had a coated furry tongue - which I know can mean thrush. Initially no other symptoms but yesterday I noticed I am getting occasional deep pains in my breasts between feeds. He still has white bits in his mouth but less on tongue now.
He possets after most feeds as I have a fast let down especially on one side - if relevant!

Am going to try to get to GP today with him.

Some questions if anyone has experience -

What other symptoms should I be looking for? DS has not really shown any signs of discomfort - though he is unsettled after feeds at times - this is all normal so hard to tell.
Will it go without treatment ( as I have read) or is that high risk ?
Assuming it is thrush ? Do I need to ask for something other Nyastin as seems to have mixed reports.
Are there other possible causes or is it a clear cut case of thrush.
I read a breastfeeding network leaflet saying I should be swabbed to be accurately diagnosed - is this standard practice?
Anything else I should know ?

TIA

Your nipples will be a paler pink than the areola and have a slight shine to them, I had this and also the deep pains, they will prescribe you some cream and maybe some tablets to treat it from tge inside out, don't let them prescribe your baby them drops they're bloody cherry flavored fgs, I asked for something else because there was no way my newborn was swallowing that, I got a gel that you put in their mouth with your little finger and you just rub it on the tongue, this way they can't spit it out, ask for the gel, my los thrush is clearing up nicely with it x

Thank you for replying - I will look at nipples after this feed.
Weirdly his tongue looks much clearer today but there are still white spots in his mouth so I will still go to the GP this afternoon as I have an appt now and don't want to regret not going if it looks worse again over the weekend,
Do you remember the name of the gel - is it Daktarin I should ask for ?

Hi you may have already been to the dr but make sure that both of you are treated else the infection can just continue passing back and forth.

GP said its not thrush based on the fact that it came off when scraped and wasn't on DS palate. Weirdly it does seem much less prominent today - even my symptoms..
Maybe I am a hypochondriac!
