8mo basically rejecting one boob - odd?

For the last week or so my ebf 8mo has been v reluctant to feed on one side. He'll do it at night but in the day tries to get out of it and when he does it's for much shorter time (maybe because it has less milk - dunno). His sleep has also gone to pot but I'm putting that down to the heat and that we moved house a week ago. I'm mainly bemused by the feeding thing but just wanted to see if anyone else had experience of this or a possible reason??

Could he be in pain on that side from something like an ear infection?

ababycalledbrian · 23/07/2013 15:49

Well I wondered about that but he's take to sleeping on that side (ie in the position he'd be bfing only that side) so I concluded that was unlikely. It's kind of distressing as he gets really worked up if I try to feed him that side and I worry he's not getting enough milk...

So tricky and stressful if you've just moved house! Bumping this for you in case someone with other ideas turns up.

Is your baby really called Brian? Love it. Smile

My dd did this for a while (i'd forgotten then saw i'd written about it on mn...). I 'solved' the problem by feeding her normally on the side she liked, then 'rugby ball' style on the other side, so essentially she was always in the same position to feed. I think this worked, and i didn't do this forever, but have no idea how/when/why we stopped...

dd2 stopped feeding on my right side at around 6-8 months. She eventually weaned herself off that boob completely. But she continue to feed properly on the left boob until I finally stopped bf at around 14 months

Thanks guys. I wondered vaguely about a cyst but can't feel anything abnormal. Am taking 'brian' to Dr tomorrow to rule out ear infection as he's also doing a bit of head banging / moshing which could just be early signs of a punk rocker or pain I guess. (and no, gunpowder, I'm afraid I just had Monty Python on the brain when I was trying to think of a nnSmile)

If all seems well when you see the GP, try seeing a cranial osteopath. I was a bit Hmm when I had the same problem and a BFC told me to take DD1 to see the cranial osteopath but it worked. Most babies have a preferred rotation of their head and this can affect their ability to BF from the non-preferred side. As a stop gap, feed rugby ball style on the 'rejected' side.
