Early self weaning, and full cream milk in Europe

So, my 15 month old son, despite my best efforts, appears to be self weaning. He now feeds for a maximum of 1-2 mins each side and will then say 'no' and head off, unsatisfied, in search of a bottle of cow's milk.

I know he's too young. I know it's unlikely. But apparently, it's happening.

We are headed to Germany, France, Holland & Belgium for a summer holiday in a few weeks. We had planned to carry on bfing while we were there as when I lived in France fresh, non UHT milk was pretty tricky to get hold of.

But now we may have no choice. Anyone know if full cream milk or ready made formula is easy to get in W Europe?

Or does anyone have any suggestions. I'm going to dry up soon...

In Germany you can get full fat fresh milk in the supermarket. In cities anyway.

Any normal large grocery shop or supermarket in Germany is going to have fresh full-fat milk, but probably not a petrol station, bakery or late-night place (which will only sell UHT and a revolting longlife cream used in coffee).

The word you'll need is Vollmilch. There is no distinction made in Germany between skimmed and semi-skimmed - the only option apart from Vollmilch is fettarme Milch (low-fat milk).

No idea about Holland and Belgium, sorry.

You can easily get full cream pasteurised milk in France. Where we holiday, it is widely available in supermarkets and that is the absolute back of beyond.

Sorry to hijack but is it bad to give uht? I live in France and give it sometimes

HenriettaChicken · 22/07/2013 09:53

Thanks for all the responses. It's good to know that fresh milk appears to be more readily available than when I lived in France 10 years ago. As for giving UHT, I really don't know. I just assumed fresh was better - and I think it tastes horrible!

I'm in NL. Full fat milk is volle melk and is in dark blue cartons. Half fat milk is halfvolle melk and is in light blue cartons. This is a Dutch staple and is available everywhere, from chip shops to petrol stations, as adults drink it. Don't buy the red cartons of karnemelk as that's soured milk/ buttermilk. (Although I like to drink it.)

In France it's v easy to get follow on milk in little 250 ml bottles, or 1 litre bottles, called 'croissance'. I buy a brand called Candia which is great and available everywhere. The 250ml bottles are v handy as they are one feed each and don't need refrigerating.

I think UHT is still fine for them. But I find, even in the South of France (where I'd assume UHT would be more popular) you can still get fresh milk.

Fresh pasteurized milk is easy to get in even smallest French and German supermarkets. My doctor recommended the lait de croissance follow on milk and although I know follow-on mill is not necessary, i used it a lot as it is UHT and comes in handy little bottles I used it a lot when traveling and on day trips. The bottle lids are made for you to fit a teat in so you can literally turn it into a bottle if you're not using a cup - good for not spilling on long car journeys! You'll find it on the baby food aisle in Carrefour and other French supermarkets.
