laidback biological nursing advice

newborn has been struggling with feeding. a laidback approach works best but it means I'm in the house all day waiting for him to latch. it can be a 3 hr struggle before he latches some nights which is a little exhausting. I can be patient for a while but wanted to know if anyone else experienced this. if so how long did it take for you to breastfeed in different positions i.e. cradle hold. we're moving house in a week and having to be lying flat and in the noddy isn't very sustainable and might upset the decorators Wink

should add this is day 9 after a birth under general anaesthetic so was with dad and bottle for first feed.

he gets very upset if we try to 'make' him feed i.e. lift up his head, hold him sideways etc

Hi congratulations on your baby Smile

My dd took up to 2 hours to latch on when she was little so I totally sympathise. With me though it was just her getting older that helped - she was prem & v small so just had to grow. Around 3 months old, everything started slotting into place!

My advice would be to just try any & every position - rugby hold is a good one for newborns. The problem with cradle hold is that it can be difficult for baby's head to stay in the right position - as they can't control their heads it relies on you to hold them in the right place & that can be tiring for long periods.

I really would advise you to find your nearest bf support group - an absolute life saver for me to get some help with positioning & attachment. I'm afraid though at this stage you really just need to go with it - I would suggest you have a room in your new home that is specifically away for decorators if poss so you can bf in a relaxed state.

Good luck with the move!
